I drive a Ford Taurus wagon. I purchased the car to fit my growing sons, they are all over 6 feet tall and need lots of leg room. The Taurus has great leg room and a wide interior to accommodate people and cargo. The second seat back is divided into two sections so the car can be modified to hold various sized cargo. The ride of the car is very smooth and, as far as performance goes, is exceptional. The only major part that I have had to replace is the transmission which for a 12 year old car makes it very dependable and economic.
Story
We have a local ice cream store and on occassion we like to go as a family. That is not a problem with the wagon as a rule but we like to bring my 2 dogs with us. That means my car has to carry me at 5 feet, my three sons at 6 feet 2 inches and 2 german shepherds around 100 pounds each. When we pull in and get out at the ice cream stand I always feel we look like a modern clown car. We do like... (more)
Pros
My favorite features are the ability to modify the interior space. This allows me to use the wagon for a variety of home projects. The dependability of the car has been excellent. I have had no major problems with the wagon and it is my most dependable vehicle. The interior is very comfortable for both me at 5 feet and my sons who are over 6 feet 2. The fuel economy is very good for a wagon. I can put in $10.00 a week and have plenty to last. The style of the rear and side windows is awesome and I have no problem seeing all around the car while inside.
Cons
I have had a lot of problems with the exterior paint. The paint on the tailgate started to bubble and then peel. Now the whole tailgate under the window is paintless.

I have the 2002 Jetta wagon with the 2.0L engine. It has nearly 240,000 miles on it! That should tell you a lot about the reliability and lifespan right there. I love the open wagon space in the back with the privacy roller. I use that area for storing groceries during errands, because it keeps the sun off the food. We have replaced the tranny once (a weak spot on the older Jetta's), but otherwise, it has been really a great car.
Story
My husband and I both own Jetta's and can attest that you will have no problem putting on a double kayak rack on the roof! We recently discovered we love kayaking, and putting the rack to carry the kayaks on and off the Jetta is pretty easy!
Pros
I love the wagon back...combined with putting the back seat down, it really gives me lots of options for how and what I carry. It has pretty good pep to the engine, especially considering its age. Doesn't use excessive amounts of necessary fluids, which I love. Just put new shoes (tires) on the old gal yesterday, and she drives like a dream. She is great both in town and on the interstates, which I drive on my daily commute to work and home.
Cons
As stated before, the transmissions on the older Jetta's are pretty much always going to have to be replaced at some point (which we did). The speedometer has a flutter to it at interstate speeds (which has only started in the past 50,000 or so miles), making using the cruise control difficult.

2004 Volvo V70 - Reliable station wagon that gets good gas mileage

The Volvo V70 turbo station wagon is a reliable, sturdy car overall. It gets good gas mileage for a car of its size and handles well. There's plenty of space for storing and transporting things in the back, as well as a roof rack that I've used a few times. Since it is a foreign car some parts are more expensive when repairs are needed. I did have an issue with the fuel pressure sensor, which was apparently defective in most Volvo V70's made during this era. The sensor performed intermittently before I finally replaced it.
Story
When the back seats are folded down there's plenty of room for two people to sleep in the back. This car also has plenty of space to carry small furniture and up to five people (snugly).
Pros
The seat warmers are great in the winter time. The front bucket seats are low and comfortable and the back seats fold forward to provide more carrying space. My model has both a tape player and CD player, which is a bonus for myself as a music lover. You can also program up to 20 radio stations in. There's a sun/moon roof and the car handles really well on winding roads and in the snow and rain. It's a wide car that rides fairly low, so it feels a lot safer than an SUV.
Cons
When parts need to be replaced, even if it's just an oil filter, those parts are more expensive than domestic cars or Asian imports. Also, a lot of parts are made of plastic and aren't as durable as metal parts.
