Well this is my first car, I bought it used about 3 years ago. It reeked of cigarette smoke, but it worked well at first. It started acting up after a "check up" at a local car place, the car alarm went off all the time and sometimes the car itself wouldn't start at all. The air conditioning worked at least which is good for a hot place like Texas. The breaks work well, but the tires have poor traction in wet conditions. The neutral safety switch was broken and the cause of the car not starting and the alarm going off constantly, oddly no professional could figure it out or replicate my issues, but I ordered a replacement and since then my car has worked relatively normal. The only issue now is it stutters when started but other wise it works reliably and has decent enough gas mileage.... (more)
Story
Well it was raining one day and there was a huge puddle in the street I drove through, but I ended up splashing these two old ladies. I felt bad but it was probably the funniest thing that's ever happened in my car.
Pros
I like that it's small and easy to maneuver. I like the color of blue it's painted. I also have these really nice new windshield wipers on it, they work pretty well too.
Cons
The previous owner smoked in it so the smell stuck around for a while. Still smells a little honestly but I can't really tell anymore. It stutters when started. The windshield has all these micro-scratches on it so driving at night is terrifying when on coming traffic's lights reflect all those tiny scratches and reduces my visibility significantly, so I only try and drive during the day. The lining on my driver side door interior is falling off and it's annoying.

2007 Volvo S40 - Tough, but cheap-feeling

I purchased this vehicle from a used lot and was aware of the issues that already existed on it. A cracked side mirror and a seat adjustment that didn't work seemed like small issues compared to the good deal that I got for it. However, these small issues have rapidly been overtaken by large issues specifically related to the interior of the car. The CD player stopped working within two months and cannot be replaced with an aftermarket player due to the nature of the audio system. The material covering the roof has also begun to come undone from the roof of the car. Further, the interior decor has a cheap feel to it, with the wood trim looking more like plastic and the buttons and steering wheel covered by paint that easily flakes off. The mechanics of the car are solid, having hit the... (more)
Story
This is the car that I packed my room into and headed down to college in. I have good memories of shoving an entire chest of drawers, eighteen pillows and three closets worth of clothes into the trunk, which proved to be surprisingly spacious.
Pros
I enjoy the luxury feel of the car. The seats are well-made and the interior is roomy. The dash is also nice, providing lots of information for the driver such as miles until empty and instantaneous and average miles per gallon. The audio has a nice sound to it so long as you don't mess with too many of the audio options. There is also quite a bit of storage available with a roomy glove box, console, and a very spacious trunk. It's also nice that the back seats are able to be laid out flat to accommodate large loads. The engine is solid on the car. It runs well and typically provides few ... (more)
Cons
The interior of the car feels cheaply made. From the seats that are not-quite-leather, to the plastic “wood trim,” and the roofing that is caving in, the interior is less than pleasing. There are myriad small noises that erupt as various loose pieces of trim and storage begin to rattle around at high speeds. The overall driving noise is somewhat deafening. The cabin is simply not able to stand up to normal road noises. There are also various pieces of paint, from the logo on the steering wheel to the buttons on the console, that are flaking off unattractively. The plastic that covers vario... (more)

I have owned Volvos before, and I was hoping this one would be as good as the last S80 I owned. I was not disappointed. I went for the smaller model in the hopes that it would get better gas mileage. Again, I was not disappointed. It gets about five miles per gallon more than the larger S80. It's 2.5-liter engine seems to have the same power, however, with a much lighter car to push around. The result is a car that will get with the program when it is needed to pass or if I'm the mood to play Indy race car driver. To say the least, it is very peppy. It seems very well made, and the build quality on most everything is what I would expect from Volvo. The electronics in the newer S40 is updated, and I was very happy with the sound quality. I really like the looks and, although small, it h... (more)
Story
When I first got it, it snowed in my area. The snow was pretty deep, and it plowed through it like it owned the place. It was great. I guess one should expect that from a car with a Swedish heritage.
Pros
The best thing I like about it is its fast acceleration. It really gets going when I press the accelerator. At the same time, it offers this performance and, at the same time, it gets good gas mileage. This is all in a very classy style much like my previous Volvo. I also very much like the build quality and entertainment system. It sounds great.
Cons
I am having to get used to the size of the car, having owned the larger S80 model. As such, it has limited storage, and passengers may be a little cramped in the back.
