2006 Volkswagen Touareg -
I am overall happy with my purchase of a 2006 VW Tourareg.
Story
I have an amusing memory of moving my son back to college with all his belongings. He's not a kid to under pack. He sat in the back seat with half the seat folded down to accommodate his belongings, and he did it for 14 hours. Items kept falling onto his lap. Fortunately he had a good sense of humor.
Pros
My favorite feature of the vehicle is that it has the feel of a luxury SUV. I can carry a lot of cargo without sacrificing the high end features. I previously owned a Land Rover and it drove like a truck in comparison to the Tourareg. As the parent of a college student I use it often to move him back and forth from school and I've never been disappointed with the cargo space.
The luxury aspects of the SUV include upgraded wheels and leather seats.
Cons
There are a few definite problems with this car. The main issue is regarding gas mileage. At best I only get 15mpg so it can be very expensive to operate. The other problem is with the frequent problems I've had with the windshield wiper motor. It seems to be fragile and breaks easily, especially during the long winters in the Northeast. I've gone through three windshield wiper motors so far and at $500 per pop it has become quite expensive to maintain. A minor problem is that I had a trailer hitch added by the dealer. It is a genuine VW system but it's failed twice on me and at the most i... (more)
2006 Volkswagen Touareg - Fun to drive, expensive upkeep
I enjoyed my Touareg when I first purchased. It was sporty, handled like a dream and looked like a Porsche Cayenne without the Porsche pricetag. The Touareg was fun to drive in the sun as it was all wheel drive and could get me anywhere I needed to be with no worries of getting stuck in the snow. Unfortunately, the brake system in the SUV was a money pit. When the brake discs needed to be replace, the rotors also needed to be replaced at the same time. This mean when I needed brakes, I could expect to spend around $1200 for both sets. Ouch!
Story
This vehicle was super sporty and could walk on water in inclement weather. I enjoyed having the performance and reliability of knowing it could get me anywhere and I felt safe being elevated instead of being a lower seating automobile (i.e. Civic, etc.)
Pros
Fun to drive, sporty, handled well, expensive feel without expensive price tag
Cons
Expensive to maintain, when things started to go out on the SUV, one thing after another would start to go out as well. Requires premium fuel and premium fuel shot up to $4+ gallon. It was a constant pinch to my wallet.
