Volkswagen Passat Owner Ratings & Reviews

2000 Volkswagen Passat - Good car with a bad electrical system
It's been a reliable car overall, has a very comfortable interior, and rides well. Seats are comfortable for long road trips, and we haven't had any major problems with the engine. Fit and finish are nice on this car, doors close well, and the body feels solid. However, the electrical systems overall have constant problems, and we've had numerous and constant repairs to fix some several of the electrical systems. One of the reasons we purchased this model was because it has seats that automatically adjust, based on which key was used. This feature has continued to break or work sporadically, and now both keys move the seat into a random position that is not what had been programmed. As far as ongoing maintenance, the car burns oil really quickly, requiring oil to be added regularly, wh... (more)
Story
We purchased this when our son was just a couple months old, after realizing that our 2-door hatchback was a complete hassle when getting a car seat in and out of the car constantly. The first few weeks of having a 4-door were such a joy!
Pros
The car has a very smooth ride, and a nice interior. The heated seats and auto-adjust seats (when working) are my favorite features. In addition, it can carry a lot of cargo, and the split-rear seats allow for a lot of awkward items that would otherwise require a truck.
Cons
The electrical systems were constantly failing, requiring repairs (sometime on the same issues) and resulting in features that didn't perform as intended.
2001 Volkswagen Passat - German Engineering doing it's thing.
My family has owned this car for about 2 years now. We've only ever had minor issues with it. Things that can attributed to 14+ years of wear and tear. Overall I would highly recommend this car to someone looking for something they can keep repaired themselves. We have the wagon style.
Story
It's the first car that I got to drive.
Pros
Because we have the Wagon Style hatchback there is plenty of room in the back to store anything we need as we go about our day, including suitcases and boxes for moving in and out of dorm rooms.
There are a lot of resources online to help you repair the car yourself if you do not want to pay a mechanic. This is a feature that I've seen in a lot of VW's. The really are "The People's Car"
very dependable performance.
Cons
Wear and tear is beginning to takes its toll. The driver's door lock went out on us a couple weeks ago and that needed repaired.
There are a couple of tubes that run rain water from under the hood to under the car and those seem to get clogged pretty easily (though cleaning them is not that hard)
Parts can be expensive because the car is of an older make and model, meaning that you have to either buy OEM or some replication piece which can be quite expensive depending on the situation.
