The car has a very stylish exterior to it while also having a comfortable and sturdy interior. I have had the car for about eight years and the interior of the car is still exceptional even through regular wear and tear of everyday life. I have never had an issue with any of the main electronic elements of the car such as the stereo or the heated seats.
Story
We took it on spring break to the beach—one adult and four teenagers. We had plenty of room for everyone's stuff and enough personal space to not start WWIII in the backseat. Hours in the car were not the expected torture associated with taking the kids and friends on vacation. Now, if I could only get all the sand out of the trunk.
Pros
The car gives off a very solid and safe feel while driving, e.g. that you will hug the road around sharp turns. I have also found that there is remarkable response and handling (one of the best of any car that I have owned). It can very comfortably fit five people for long distances, even in the rear middle seat. I am a really big music fan so I had planned to replace the stereo when I bought this car but turns out that wasn't necessary as it has a pretty good one already equipped. I really enjoyed driving this car while we owned it. Initially it was my dad's car, but I learned how to drive on this car and have been driving it off and on for the past 6 years. It's very comfortable, gets pretty respectable gas mileage, and can be fun to drive. It's not quite as nice as a BMW or Mercedes or other luxury brand, but it has everything you would need to be just as comfortable as those cars, at a much lower price point. I don't know what else might be considered a mid-luxury car, but I doubt it's as good as the Passat. It needs repairs every now and then, but never anything that serious and still worth the costs.
Pros
-Comfortable -Solid gas mileage (25/35 city/hwy) -Manual transmission (really smooth and a lot of fun) -Handles great -Still running great with 150k+ miles on it
Cons
-Needs repairs every now and then, lots of finicky parts. Repairs aren't too expensive, but it's enough and often enough that it's something to consider -Uses more oil than most cars. You have to top it up every couple of months, which isn't bad since oil is only a couple dollars a can, but it's just another thing to remember.
