2000 Volkswagen Passat - nice, quick, reliable, fun
I really like how quickly it takes off and how easily it will do 115+ even though it is 14 years old. However it does not handle well in the snow/ice at all. I have brand new tires and still, the slightest bit of snow will make traction tricky.
Story
I passed an unmarked cop who was traveling on the highway and I didn't know he was a cop. He was doing 80 and I pass him at 115. I ended up getting a ticket, but no points.
Pros
I really like that it has a sunroof and that there are power window and locks. I like the option for the black mesh curtain in the back window that retracts when not in use. The trunk is huge and I could not really ask for much more space. I also like that the back seats fold down so there I trunk access that way.
Cons
The electrical system is not in very good shape, although This is very common in German cars. I do not like how the front cup holders are set up with the ash tray under them as I am a smoker, but to most this probably would not be a big deal.
2004 Volkswagen Passat - Great solid high end car
I bought this car with only 40,000 miles for $13,000 in Georgia. I have driven it from Pennsylvania to Florida to Georgia too many times to count. It broke down only two times that I can think of. One time was the water pump, and the other was the fuel pump. I now have over 150,000 miles on it and have only had to do minor work. This is a car I will keep until it finally gives out.
Story
I have driven this car through snow that 4WD trucks could not go through. I was in the mountains in West Virginia.
Pros
Quiet solid car. It gets great gas mileage while on the highway. I usually get 32 MPG during highway travel. Around the city, I get around 23 MPG. Very well handling car. I am a spirited drive, sometimes drive aggressively, and have had no problems sticking to the road. Plenty of leg room for rear passengers. Seats fold down to accommodate large or long cargo.
Cons
Some parts are expensive to fix when broken. Changing the headlights take a great deal of work. Oil has problems if not using synthetic oils and changing them regularly.
