This is a nice, comfortable car with excellent fuel economy. An awesome car for long trips as it seats four comfortably but up to five people. It has a 60/40 fold down split in the rear seat, allowing the transport of long items like plumbing, lumber, or skis.
Story
I was on a rafting trip with some family about 200 miles away, and the second car for the trip broke down. For the drive back, everyone and all the equipment had to fit in the Passat, and we managed to do it fairly easy and not uncomfortable either.
Pros
This car with its diesel engine has plenty of power and yet can also easily do 40+ miles per gallon on the freeway. The interior is spacious for this size of car, and most adults can comfortably fit in the back seat, unless they are over six feet tall. The trunk is also very spacious as well. The design of the hinges allow for zero usage of the trunk space, so if you can stuff it in the trunk and it is below the rubber seal trim piece, then the trunk lid will close. This trait has been very useful for me. The rear seats can fold down, allowing you to load in very long items as needed. On o... (more)
Cons
The bad things about a Passat tdi are primarily the costs. These cars came with a catastrophic factory engine design that can cause serious engine damage if not dealt with preemptively. A flaw the VW recognized by designing and selling a corrected part but making the owner pay the 3,000 dollar repair bill. Also, the suspension although is a good design for comfort and control it also wears out quickly too. The car also eats CV shaft boots far more frequently than any other car as well. In general, this car has a high cost to maintain.

2005 Volkswagen Passat - Awesome fuel economy but you better bring a heavy wallet

The diesel engine in this car provides 40 to 50 mpg freeway with AC on with plenty of power to climb the hills to go coast to coast and to pass slower vehicles effortlessly. The ride is very smooth, and the interior is very comfortable. However, the main problem with the car is the cost of ownership and starting it in freezing temperatures. The glow plugs, used to preheat the engine to start it in the cold temps, only last a year or two and they are a dealer only part (yes, even 15 years later) and cost $50 each. There is also the complicated suspension system it uses, which gives it the smooth ride, wears out in like five years. The aftermarket replacements are even worse, so it is still best to use genuine VW parts here too because it is not an easy job to change. Then there is the d... (more)
Story
On a rafting trip, the other car blew up its engine and we had to fit three inflatable kayaks, helmets, paddle, PFDs and all of the people for a three-hour drive back home.
Pros
Great fuel economy, comfortable interior with a large trunk, smooth ride quality, and a powerful engine.
Cons
Cost of ownership - bring heavy wallet!
