My Beetle started out with some minor issues, that later turned into major problems. While I enjoyed the comfortable ride and surprising spaciousness of the car, and it did drive well on trips, the mechanical issues that progressed were expensive and time consumptive. The last year I owned this car, it spent 7 of 12 months in the shop. Talk about an inconvenience! In the end, I was willing to trade a nice driving, fun car for something reliable that wouldn't cost me a fortune to keep up.
Story
There were a lot of fun times in this car, picking up too much stuff and finding a way to fit it in with the seats folded down. I brought home a large Christmas tree, a table and chairs set, and six bunnies this way.
Pros
The Beetle was fun to drive, due to the Turbo engine. It had fast acceleration and the automatic transmission shifted smoothly through the gears. The package on the car included a sunroof, power windows and remote locks, which always came in handy. The Monsoon stereo had great sound. The hatchback made it easy to transport stuff despite being a small car.
Cons
The car burned premium gas, and got poor gas mileage (12 city/17 hwy) which was never remedied despite replacing spark plugs, filters, trying better oils, tune ups, etc. Only having two doors was a downside, but I knew that when I bought it. Maintenance was often impossible at a generic shop, and it had to be taken to the costlier Volkswagen dealer, which also took longer.
