2009 Volkswagen Jetta - Solid build with a few issues
This car had everything I was looking for - four door sedan, manual transmission, fully loaded (sunroof, heated leather seats, power everything). The black leather interior with all of the lights on the dash create a cool effect in the dark. The only two things I wish the car had was Bluetooth calling and a built in Navigation system.
The car was built well. If you open the door and jump on it, you can feel that the car is very solid. You can feel that the car is heavy and that in an accident, it is not going to be crushed.
This car also has amazing trunk space - probably one of the largest for a mid-size sedan.

On top of all of these neat features, because this is a TDI, it gets 40+ mpg highway - even though diesel is a bit more expensive and not every gas station carries it, the great mpg makes up for it.
The car is fun to drive - manual transmission gives you more control and once the turbo kicks in, it really picks up and goes.
The car was a bit expensive to buy (18.7k with 50k miles) but these cars hold their value well and the engine will last a long time. When I purchased the car, I was looking for one that I could own and drive for a long time - as long as I don't keep getting check engine light issues, I will be driving it for a long time.
My wife and I took the car on a 3 hour roadtrip the day after we bought it. We kept finding new, little features as we tinkered with the various buttons and switches in the car. We kept watching the MPG meter to see how high we could it. After it hit above 40mpg, I took a picture and posted it to facebook. VW really focused on the little things in this car. It has many neat features that I've never seen in another car. For example, all of the window switches, for all seats, have both an automatic up and automatic down. Most cars only have automatic up and only for the driver's side window.
The FAB can be used to automatically roll down all of the windows or close all of the windows/sunroof just by holding the unlock or lock button.
The MPG the car gets is another great pro. Given the right driving situation, this car can get 50+ mpg and with the price of fuel going up, this is a good thing t... (more)

This was the last model year for the body style and I really prefer this body style to the newer styles. It is a classic sedan style that is timeless and will not go out of style. Also with the silver color and black trim, it is a clean, sharp looking car.
The front seats have a decent amount of room to sit.
The biggest issue I've had with this car is that in not quite 2 years of owning it, I've had three check engine lights come on that required me to take it to the dealership. When I drive a car, reliability is key. If my car keeps needing to be taken to the dealership (not even in the same town), that is a issue for me.
The other big issue is that because this car is German and a diesel, all maintenance on it requires a special mechanic and is much more expensive than an American gas engine car. For example, an oil change, even though it only needs to be done every 10k miles, costs 100 buck... (more)

Another con about this car is because it is a diesel engine, the pickup and go is weak until the turbo kicks in. This is not a huge issue for me but if I want to speed up on the highway, I'm not always able to as quickly as I would like. Another annoying part of the car is that when it rains or is damp out, the brakes squeal for the first minute or two of driving and using them.
Due to the size of the trunk, the back seats are a bit tighter if you are a tall adult sitting back there.
2009 Volkswagen Jetta - Sporty, fuel efficient car
My Jetta TDI is a sporty, fuel efficient car. The turbo diesel engine with a stick shift gives the car great pickup and is fun to drive. The trunk space is great but at the sacrifice of leg room in the back.
It being a German car makes it a bit difficult to do you own work on it and it is more expense than American cars to get work done on it. That being said, it seems to require less work to be done on it overall.
The car feels very solid compared to other cars I've driven / been in.

The car gets great fuel mileage - 40+ in warm weather, 30+ in cold weather.
It is a sporty looking sedan with leather, moon roof and great acceleration. It is a stick shift car that isn't a sports car but isn't the base model of the car either.

The car being German means getting work done costs more than an American car. Also, the car being diesel means that engine work is more expensive.
Diesel fuel also costs more - the fuel efficiency of the vehicle more than makes up for that but when regular gas is 3.00 and diesel is 4.00, it is a bit painful.
Also, diesel is not sold at every gas station, making it hard to refuel sometimes.
