2009 Volkswagen Jetta - Efficient stylish and practical
I was surprised that a VW was in the same price range as other vehicles I had been shopping (Kia and Mazda), so I decided to go with the Jetta. It looked classy and upscale, and had more oomph than my old pickup truck.
Story
Getting good gas mileage on long interstate road trip to new England.
Pros
One usual pro was discovering that I could fit long pieces of lumber in the car with the trunk closed. I was coming off using a truck and was trading the ability to haul stuff for improved efficiency. Also the Jetta drove wonderful in my snowy climate. Front wheel drive gripped slippery roads well, and antilock brake feature kicked in to help avoid and skids or slides. A very winter worthy car. I also like the transmission's auto/manual mode allowing me to shift in manual 6 speed mode, or put it in auto mode - which was a blessing during an arm injury where my right arm was not availabl... Cons
The floor mats snap to floor snaps and mine busted off in first 2 weeks of ownership. The stereo was ok, but not great. I replaced it myself on the side. The oil changes are expensive since only synthetic blends are to be used, but it prolongs the life of the car I suppose. The plastic on the side of the door also came loose and the passenger side mirror plastic cracked... both fixed with gorilla glue. Gas mileage average in urban/city streets.
2001 Volkswagen Jetta - I love my Jetta
I bought my Jetta while I was in high school (I still have it, obviously) and I have since driven other cars, but I love the Jetta the most. It's a sturdy, trusty car and even though I have had to put some money into it, it still drives great. It's good to drive in the snow, because the steering wheel is hard to turn, which I like. So if you gently turn the wheel, it's not like the car swerves. It takes some muscle. It's a small car which makes it perfect for getting into small parking spots that larger cars and SUVs can't fit into. The trunk fits more than enough, all of my art supplies and canvases fit with no issues. Great gas mileage as well. One nugget about my Jetta—and apparently all Jetta's from around 2001, it smells like crayons! Pretty much every person that has gotten into ... (more)
Story
I had to drive this car through New York City and was able to find on the street parking due to its small size!
Pros
The size, the way the steering wheel is not loose, the mileage, and the design.
Cons
One of the negative things is that the front bumper is extremely low and has a "lip" under it, which means you can go over those cement bumpers in parking lots undetected, but when you reverse you hear that horrible metal ripping sound. Get out of the car to see your front bumper halfway pulled off. Had to get mine screwed back in in different spots.
