1986 Volkswagen Jetta - Nice but not too much
For what it is I feel that VW makes an ok-ish car. The Jetta I have is no exception. Lots of features are common to all cars an VW's reputation for high quality does not stand out as much as they would like you to think it does.
Story
I came across this Jetta by accident on day, gave it to my father and he gave it back to me after it overheated. Not too funny at the time I guess.
Pros
It is holding up pretty well considering the age of it. I have repaired or replaced a great many things over the years including the engine head, starter motor and master brake cylinder. Some of these should have lasted forever considering how much the car cost new though.
Cons
Basic car without any 'nice stuff' I found on other cars out there. Grossly over priced. VW reputation is very exaggerated. I found lots of other weird things the car maker did when designing the car that made me wonder at Germans in general. Like why put the starter motor in such a location that it is all but impossible to change. It too me 3 hours to get the thing off the car. Should have been a lot easier if they had just thought about the 'next guy' some instead of what was easy for the guys on the factory floor to do.
2001 Volkswagen Jetta - People's Car? Nope.
This car was a complete and total lemon, the vehicle only had 70,000 miles on it when I got the car, and by the time it broke down it had barely reached 85,000 miles, 15,000 under the standard 100,000 mile lifetime of an average car. The car performed well for the first little bit after I got it, but eventually repairs had to be made to the vehicle, the final one being an unaffordable 3,500 dollar transmission.
Story
Driving with the sunroof open on the highway, right after I bought this car in the Summer.
Pros
+ This car had a powerful V6 engine that provided it with good power and acceleration.
+ Parking was easy due to the small size of the vehicle.
+ Despite the small size of the car, it had a fairly roomy interior for it's size.
+ The sun roof feature was u
Cons
- This car required a more expensive oil at every oil change.
- The transmission required special Volkswagen specific tools to change the transmission fluid.
- Electronic keys for this car cost 250 dollars for every one made.
- Poor brakes not suited for
