My Volkswagen Jetta had some really high points and really low points. I was always happy with the fuel efficiency, the size, and the interior space. The problems it had were with limited inside features and frequent electrical and functional trouble that resulted in going back to the dealer a lot for repairs.
Story
I was getting ready to go on a road trip with some friends and one of them commented that she was worried how much would fit in my car. As we slowly loaded our suitcases and backpacks into the car, her face got more and more surprised at how much was fitting in, and when we got into the car, she joked that it would be dragging on the ground from how much was in the back. It made us laugh, espe... (more)
Pros
The Volkswagen Jetta was a really fuel efficient vehicle. It got great mileage on the freeway, almost 50 MPG, and the mileage in-city was also good. It had a lot of interior space. The seating area was roomy and even my tall family members had space for their legs, and the back held a lot whether it was sports equipment, groceries from big shopping trips, or suitcases and bags for when I was traveling. The overall size of the car was very good, especially considering its MPG and its spaciousness. It wasn't too large and fit comfortably into parking spaces.
Cons
The worst part about the Volkswagen Jetta was that I was constantly experiencing problems with the car parts and the electrical parts. The indicators for tire pressure, oil change, oil level, seat belts, door locks, temperature, and other things went on and off randomly whether they needed attention or not. The brake pads and parts to be able to open and close the windows needed replacing after very little use. I also found that the of internal customization features for things like the seat cushions, mirror positions, and steering wheel positions were very limited and not always comfortable.

I have had my car for nine years and driven it 60,000 miles. I bought it new because I couldn't afford to keep sinking money into repairs for used cars. I had quite a few Volkswagens growing up, and I knew that they lasted a long time, so I decided to go for that. The Cash for Clunkers program was going on at the time which enabled me to afford a new car for the first time in my life.
Story
My favorite memories are taking my daughter on road trips in my car--confident that it wouldn't break down or wear out during the trip. We have driven to Nebraska from New Mexico and many times to Colorado.
Pros
My car is dependable and seldom requires work outside of scheduled maintenance. The system doesn't even require oil changes more than every 10,000 miles. After all of this time, it feels like a part of me, and the idea of ever giving it up is strange. After I spend so many years driving used cars and spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars on repairs with very little gained, I love that I don't have to bring it in every month. My daughter is hoping to inherit it when she moves out in a year or so, and I feel confident that it will be reliable for her, as well.
Cons
The worst part about it is actually the revelations that we keep getting about Volkswagen's practices regarding emissions and other testing. One of the reasons I bought it was because they had a reputation as environmentally friendly, and it was very upsetting to find out that so much of it was untrue. I also dislike going to the dealership for work, so now that my warranty is expired, I go elsewhere. The biggest negative with the car itself is that it makes it nearly impossible to do my own work on it. An oil change at home is difficult, but there are things like brakes that can only be w...
