2002 Volkswagen Jetta - Better than I expected.
I bought this car about a year ago and it has really surprised me. The previous owner kept up with routine maintenance and it shows in how reliable it has been for me. It had one issue with the water intake valve leaking but I hear that's a common problem with the older 2.0 Jetta's. Easy cheap replacement and I took care of the temp sensor while I was at it. The 2.0 Motor is pretty gutless as I would have preferred the 1.8 Turbo but I do feel the reliability and ease of maintenance for the 2.0 Makes it a good deal. I also hear the auto tranny models will not last long but I have the 5sp and it seems to still shift smooth at 210K. Next item for replacement are the front struts which I also hear is a common issue.

I love that the back end is just long enough to accommodate my semi short frame because I've enjoyed many a camping trips without having to pitch a tent. Sleeping in my car is A-OK by me.

So far, the car has not left me stranded and I've gone on a number of long road trips. Lots of options such as cruise control, power windows/locks and sunroof. The epa mpg ratings were set pretty low but I've been surprised to get in the low to mid 30's hwy. That's actually the most impressive thing. For a wagon I think it looks nice and sporty.

Low power for a vow engine. The front headlights glaze over pretty easily. I had a bad water leaking issue from the sunroof and passenger door seal. Car stance is way too low. ABS module has gone out but it still stops fine.

2002 Volkswagen Jetta - Horrible Investment
Upon buying this vehicle, nobody informed me what a terrible mistake I was about to make. I bought it at 120,000 miles and was hoping it would last me through high school and college. Little did I know, it would only last around two years and would have more problems than I could count. Although there are a few pros for the car, all related to the exterior/interior design of the car, and that it was easy to drive, most of the comments I have are negative. Mechanically, the car was absolutely awful. It worked perfectly for the first year, but when one thing started going wrong, everything started going wrong. It's a never ending cycle of things breaking and me being stressed of whether it's even going to get me home or not. AAA has become my best friend. That stupid Jetta caused me so m... (more)

I had to park my car somewhere for a photo shoot that I was going to be late for- but there were no parking spots that would fit my cars needs. My car has no reverse so I have to park somewhere that I can pull out of- otherwise, I'm stuck. My car has no reverse so I have to park somewhere that I can pull out of- otherwise, I'm stuck. Instead, I parked in the area that clearly read "NO PARKING" and had signs about how any cars parking there would be towed... but I have nowhere else to park! So I wrote a note that said "I'm so sorry. My car doesn't have reverse and I had to park here! Please don't tow me!!! :)" After several hours, I didn't have a parking ticket, and I didn't get towed. Who knows if someone actually saw it or not or if it would've worked.
It had a great sound system, at least for my standards. It was cute and small, which made it easy to park. It had comfy seats and a spacious trunk. I liked the overall design of the car!

It seemed to always be having some problem of some sort. First, the coolant started leaking out, so we got that fixed. Then, the wind shield wiper fluid started leaking, so we got that fixed. Then the reverse went out, which we couldn't get fixed. The car repair shop told us that to fix it would cost more than the car is worth, so I spent the next few months of my life strategically parking. If I made a mistake? I would have to get outside in the 110+ Phoenix weather and push it. Keep in mind, I'm a 110 pound girl with no muscle whatsoever. Then, the brakes started to go out, and it would ... (more)

I would have to get outside in the 110+ Phoenix weather and push it. Keep in mind, I'm a 110 pound girl with no muscle whatsoever. Then, the brakes started to go out, and it would violently shake every time I would try to stop. Then, the wheel would start locking up randomly, so it started to become really dangerous to drive my car. Lastly, the BRAND NEW battery would randomly die if I left my car turned off for more than 24 hours, so I would have to completely disconnect the battery every time I was done driving if I didn't want to take it to Auto Zone to charge it. So, now it is sitting in the parking garage, and I'm going to end up selling it for a fraction of the price I paid for it. I wish this wasn't a true story, but it is.
