Volkswagen Golf Owner Ratings & Reviews

1999 Volkswagen Golf - Average daily driver
The car was bought in 2007, and I still drive it today. It drives pretty good; although, a lot of issues have arose with the vehicle over the years. I thought that all German vehicles are very well built but later found out that is not the case.
Story
Long drives to many different places, as this car is a great cruiser. There were many times where the car was driven to different states on the highway and the city. The car has a typical German approach to the design, which makes it stand out. The handling of the vehicle is typical German and is very tight around corners.
Pros
Some of the pros of this vehicle are mostly related to design and body built quality. The external and internal design of the car is very modern, and although the car is about 19 years old, it certainly does not look like it. The interior material quality is very well built, and the exterior of the vehicle does not have any rust spots after 19 years.
Cons
The cons of the vehicle are mainly related to the drivetrain. There have been several problems I have encountered that are related to the engine and the transmission. The engine has had problems with the timing belt and a couple of the cylinders. The transmission is the biggest problem, and the car frequently is out of gear, and it is very hard to shift.
1987 Volkswagen Golf - This Golf was not a hole in one
This VW Golf was my first car. I loved it only because it was my first car. It was a hatch back and originally I was not crazy about the look of it. Being a high school student I was not really looking for performance, I just needed something to get me to and from work and school. But this car had it's issues. It was not very reliable and it seemed every time we fixed one thing, something else broke.
Story
The sound system was not great, but my Dad was able to hook some extra speakers into the system so I could open the hatch back and play music with my friends!
Pros
The hatch back was convenient. It was an automatic transmission. It got OK gas mileage.
Cons
Something was always going wrong with it. It was very difficult and expensive to fix. When you took it apart to fix a part, something else would break. My dad believed it was cursed!
