2002 Volkswagen Golf - I enjoy the cars handling and responsive power but it has it's flaws.

I love the styling of this car. I've recently added the factory spoiler and it really brings out the rear of the car. The front end styling is my personal favorite, the headlight, upper and lower grilles match together flawlessly in a sporty modern way that has aged really well with newer models. The car's 1.9 Liter turbo charged diesel engine will surprise you with it's great low end torque, which provides at peak around 200FWTQ if you really push it. The car's overall acceleration is good between 0-50MPH but at any higher speed, the car does seem a little slower when moving through traffic at 60MPH. The car is also very fun to drive with the low end power, providing great commuting. The deal breaker vs other cars in its class, though, is you get all that power but all that power does... (more)
Story
I bought my first home with this car, and I really found out how big the inside of the car really is, regardless of my height of 6'1". Anyway, one of the final trips over to the old house, I ran into my neighbor at the time and they had just gotten the same generation vehicle as mine with the same diesel engine and trim line I had. I'm still friends with them today and they still have the same... (more)
Pros
Exceptional low end toque, ability to spin the tires while stock provides fun ride! The cars handling is great on the curvy hill rural area I travel daily. Great styling for a hatchback that has aged VERY well with other newer models. Very comfortable ride, seats hold you in place. Very safe with side air bags. Roomy interior, fold down seats provide plenty of room for Home Depot trips. Very cool sunroof, sporty tilted position included. 43MPG highway 37MPG city for an older car is very desirable with gas prices of today.
Cons
Runs on diesel fuel Turbo Charged Volkswagens of this model tend to have many vacuum issues. Replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor twice for $350 each time, Volkswagen is aware of the issue with the old MAF and will not issue a manufacture recall. The maintenance is very expensive on this car, but I have had no reliability issues other than transmission grind which was fixed with recommended Transmission fluid flush and filter. Common failure of the turbo from carbon build up is also a big con on this vehicle. The car features an open valve turbo and those valves can seize with enough carbon ... (more)

1995 Volkswagen Golf - 1995 VW Golf A Good Car, But Nothing Great

Overall, the 1995 VW Golf was a reliable car, and excellent in wet weather or snowy conditions. It was small, and not the most comfortable to drive. However, the driving experience was pretty great, and it was easy to fall for this little car. Despite it's compact size, this car was very good looking. Perhaps 'handsome' is a better description. All in all, I truly enjoyed every driving experience with the Golf. It was the maintenance and repairs that forced me to give it up.
Story
One winter, we got out of school early because of snowy/icy weather. As everyone was trying to leave, many of the other drivers were getting stuck on icy spots in the parking lot. My little Golf never had any trouble with icy roads, and I had a great time weaving in and out of all the other cars (and some trucks) that were getting stuck in the lot.
Pros
The Golf was fun to drive and got great gas mileage (and this was back when gas was under $1/ gallon. We are talking 30+ mpg anywhere. Despite it's smallish engine, it had a lot of get-up and go. This car practically hummed at 90 mph, but I rarely got a chance to push it that far. The 5-speed transmission was so much fun to drive. This car made me love manual transmissions.
Cons
While it was reliable, if you did have any mechanical issues, the cost of repairs was very high. Foreign cars are always more expensive to fix, and there were few choices for parts outside of buying new from the manufacturer. There were also many electrical issues with this car. The primary reason that I traded it is was because it was going to need over $1,000 in repairs to find and address those issues.
