2010 Volkswagen Golf - Much Love
The 2010 Volkswagen Golf is a totally solid vehicle. She's fun to drive. I have a manual transmission which, in my humble opinion is a major part of the fun. She's extremely responsive, even five years old, or should I say: five-years-young? I'm proud to drive this car. She's got very clean lines, and isn't looking dated. I don't think the car will ever look dated with the proper preventative maintenance that she deserves. I know that there are the many faster, and more gutsier versions of this car, but I am extremely happy with this version. I'm pretty proud and grateful to have been in the Volkswagen family for many years now. I have always leased the cars from VW. This car is the first one I kept. I kept her because I love her. She's German engineered through and through as well as born in Stuttgart. As far as my trips to the VW mechanics - There was the preventative maintenance that was paid for by the manufacturer at first, under warranty. Now I am a stickler about keeping to the scheduled maintenance, even out of warranty. I know she's got many, many, more kilometers ahead of her. These trips to the mechanic were never for anything unscheduled too. This car is solid! I definitely recommend this car.
This car is the perfect "Dog-Car." Sometimes I tell people that the car isn't mine. I tell 'em: "This is my dogs' car. I am just their driver." For some reason, Volkswagen driver/owners are dog people. Do you know what I mean? The next time you are driving about, pay special attention to that Touareg next to you at the perpendicular intersection. Yup, just as you suspect, there's a Great Dane in there! Or see that Golf? I spy those two Chihuahuas! I've had many an awesome, memorable moment with my two dogs in the Golf. What's more fun is the dogs as well as the two-legged "dogs" (friends) hehe. Guarantee, the next time you see a VW, I bet there's a dog in there! Of course, that Touareg would fit the dogs better. Or even the Porsche Macan, oh how nice, and yes, these are all Volkswagen Group cars, yes they would be more roomy, but it's super fun to have the two huge dogs in your rear-view mirror! Yes it's true, we Volkswagen owner/drivers are all dog lovers! Okay, maybe not ALL...................
I absolutely love this version of the Golf. Manual, and three doors. ZIPPY! That's a really good adjective I have for the car. Almost like "Herbie." Do you remember him? He's that classic Volkswagen Beetle from the Disney franchise. I guess watching those movies makes me think of this car. They're almost the same colors! What if I were to put a "Herbie" racing stripe and markings on my car? How fun?! The car is the base version, but that definitely doesn't mean boring in any way. So responsive, so fun, so solid. The Golf has an extremely long, and storied history. I guess that once Volkswagen got it right, they kept improving upon this platform. It's such an excellent example of their love and pristine engineering. Writing about this car brings to me, a thought of what the next car should be. I have a feeling it'll definitely be a either a newer version, or a car absolutely in the same Volkswagen Family. This is a massive family too. We're talking Audi, Bentley, Porsche, MAN, Skoda, and I can't remember the others! There's much more! She's a fun town car, as well as an agile freeway, countryside car.
Well I am quite an optimist so this may be a bit difficult for me to write about the negative. I guess I can try! She's got a bit of a ceiling droop, and that's completely correctable! The structure isn't drooping mind you! I'm talking about the headliner or whatever that's called. I suppose this can happen in any car. I intend to remedy this soon. My shift knob isn't intact. Again, cosmetic issue. The schematic for the gear position is in the glove box. Yes, it's meant to be on the shift knob! The car is a three-door. Sometimes I admire the same version of the car as another one drives past. The five-door version. Yes, this technically cannot really be a negative flaw. It's what I chose. Don't get me wrong. I LOOOOVE my three-door. The car sips petrol too. Oops, haha maybe this isn't a negative. It depends whose point of view you're looking at. I suppose if you own a filling station, you'd definitely say that that is a flaw! We're five years into the life of this car and to be completely honest, I'm having a bit of trouble pointing out the negatives!
2012 Volkswagen Golf - Great Car!
This car is very reliable. We have had this car since 2012 and have put 90,000 miles on it. We take this car on all of our long trips. It gets awesome mileage because it is a diesel engine. We can usually get any were from 400 to 600 miles on one tank before refilling. This car looks small on the outside but is quite large on the inside. We have put many things in this car. We have yet to not be able to fit something we have purchased in this car. There is a large trunk and then you can fold down the seats.

We are able to speed quite fast in it. It is a manual so we can get up quite quick and was able to beat a mustang that was trying to be faster.

I really don't have any cons about this vehicle at all

2002 Volkswagen Golf - I enjoy the cars handling and responsive power but it has it's flaws.
I love the styling of this car. I've recently added the factory spoiler and it really brings out the rear of the car. The front end styling is my personal favorite, the headlight, upper and lower grilles match together flawlessly in a sporty modern way that has aged really well with newer models. The car's 1.9 Liter turbo charged diesel engine will surprise you with it's great low end torque, which provides at peak around 200FWTQ if you really push it. The car's overall acceleration is good between 0-50MPH but at any higher speed, the car does seem a little slower when moving through traffic at 60MPH. The car is also very fun to drive with the low end power, providing great commuting. The deal breaker vs other cars in its class, though, is you get all that power but all that power does... (more)

The deal breaker vs other cars in its class, though, is you get all that power but all that power doesn't come at a cost for fuel. I average 42-43 MPG with this car and couldn't be happier. (Keep in mind, it is a diesel standard vehicle!) The car's interior is very well designed but the cheap plastic materials do not age well. Also the silver sticker trim along the door handles has faded over the years I've owned the car. There is one big con for shorter drivers though, the dash shoots up around the steering wheel and can block view for shorter drivers. The cars style has aged very well with minimal repair except for the suspension which is very squeaky even with factory VW parts installed. The car has been in the shop twice with rather pricey maintenance because the car requires specialty tools for the timing belt, tensioner and water pump which I later acquired after the second timing belt change. Each service for the timing belt and water pump ran around $780 dollars by a European Auto Shop, keep in mind you will have a hard time finding regular mechanic shops wanting to work on a diesel. Fuel additive is also necessary for this vehicle which is an additional cost to already expensive diesel fuel. Oil changes are recommended to be synthetic further increasing the cost of maintenance. Overall the car has been very reliable, 175k miles on the original engine and 5 speed manual transmission.
I bought my first home with this car, and I really found out how big the inside of the car really is, regardless of my height of 6'1". Anyway, one of the final trips over to the old house, I ran into my neighbor at the time and they had just gotten the same generation vehicle as mine with the same diesel engine and trim line I had. Anyway, one of the final trips over to the old house, I ran into my neighbor at the time and they had just gotten the same generation vehicle as mine with the same diesel engine and trim line I had. I'm still friends with them today and they still have the same car, with more mileage than I have. They're an elderly couple and have had a few more problems than I have had, they always asked for my help with the vehicle. I eventually got their son into auto mechanical work and he's since finished his education and has been looking for a good college for auto repair and service!
Exceptional low end toque, ability to spin the tires while stock provides fun ride!
The cars handling is great on the curvy hill rural area I travel daily.
Great styling for a hatchback that has aged VERY well with other newer models.
Very comfortable ride, seats hold you in place.
Very safe with side air bags.
Roomy interior, fold down seats provide plenty of room for Home Depot trips.
Very cool sunroof, sporty tilted position included.
43MPG highway 37MPG city for an older car is very desirable with gas prices of today.

Runs on diesel fuel
Turbo Charged Volkswagens of this model tend to have many vacuum issues.
Replaced the Mass Air Flow Sensor twice for $350 each time, Volkswagen is aware of the issue with the old MAF and will not issue a manufacture recall.
The maintenance is very expensive on this car, but I have had no reliability issues other than transmission grind which was fixed with recommended Transmission fluid flush and filter.

Common failure of the turbo from carbon build up is also a big con on this vehicle. The car features an open valve turbo and those valves can seize with enough carbon build up, and on a diesel, there's a lot of that.
Intake Manifolds are often needed to be replaced from carbon build up when they can simply be removed and cleaned, causing frustration from owners.
The automatic transmission on this generation of car is FILLED with problems, manual transmission however is fine with recommended maintenance.
