This vehicle is extremely well designed and built. This small SUV drives with the agility of a sedan and the toughness of a truck. The ride is incredibly smooth and is able to handle dips and rough terrain with ease. Gas mileage on the vehicle is stickered about 30 MPG, but we found the car drives a realistic 20-25 MPG on average for most situations. Performance was incredible considering it is only a four cylinder and has two-wheel drive on the LX. It was able to easily handle ice and snow and climbed most mountain roads without any problem. The vehicle interior and dash is simple, yet has plenty of technology. That is the great thing about Toyotas. No matter how technological they are, they are always simplistic in design. Interior is comfortable, but seats only four or a tight five.... (more)
Story
We drove the car up to snow the first month we had the car, and it got caught in a pretty severe winter storm. While other cars were pulling off the road, our RAV handled perfectly. The car dealt with the windy roads and snow with ease, without any sliding or slipping. Definitely the best car to drive during crazy and unpredictable conditions.
Pros
The simplicity of the technical features is great. My Rav4 LX has some serious technology features which are standard, but everything was easy to figure out. It includes a user guide book, but you won't need it.
Cons
It would be great the Rav4 was more fuel economical. The sticker indicates a 30-35 MPG, but I found it gets much less MPG then indicated for typical driving. To get better gas mileage, you need to pay at least $10,000 more for the hybrid model, which still gives moderate savings.

I've owned luxury SUV's in the past and my RAV4 performs as well as any of them for half the price. The fit and finish rival the other expensive cars I've owned and it has almost all the important features that were important to me and my spouse. It's stylish, easy to drive and hugs in the cabin like a car that costs so much more. Toyota knocked it out of the park when they designed this vehicle. It has enough power for any situation and quiet enough to make you forget its a 4 cylinder. The steering on this car is better than my previous Lexus and I loved that car too.
Story
My sister heard we got a new vehicle and after asking which one did we buy, she said, "oh, that's too small for me." She came over, went on a drive with us and the next day, bought one herself.
Pros
It's easy to drive with great visibility. The seats are designed so well, even after long drives, you don't feel very fatigued. It has more room inside than you would think and the cargo area is perfectly sized for my families needs. The controls on the dash are well laid out and easy to reach with minimal effort. The drive is smooth and quieter than you would expect for a car costing less than 30k. It seats 5 adults comfortably with a rear cargo area that easily fits four large suitcases. The cost of ownership will be much lower than other vehicles I've owned which makes keeping this car ... (more)
Cons
I have nothing negative to mention other than I wish all manufacturers made navigation standard on all trim levels.

Overall Score: 7.1/10

Safety Features: 8/10

The 2018 Toyota RAV4 received a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA, the federal agency's top rating. It is an IIHS Top Safety Pick for scoring Good in most crash tests. The only test where it scored lower was Poor for Small Overlap Front: Passenger Side.

The Toyota RAV4 comes standard with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety and driver assistance features. These include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic high beams, and pedestrian detection. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear cross-traffic alert are available on the higher Limited and Platinum trims. Many airbags, ABS, traction and stability control, and electronic brake-force distribution are among its long list of conventional safety equipment.

Value: 8/10

The 2018 RAV4's pricing is right on the money with its rivals, the Honda CR-V and Ford Escape, two very strong contenders. Elsewhere in this competitive segment, the Mazda CX-5 and Kia Sportage have lower base prices but don't offer quite as much base tech. Hybrid availability also bolsters its value against some of its competition.

A fully-loaded RAV4 sits below the mid- to high-$30,000 price range; this beats out the Ford Escape and Volkswagen Tiguan, which get significantly pricier.

Tech Features: 7/10

Tech, connectivity, and convenience are RAV4's strong suits. The Toyota RAV4 LE and some impressive optional upgrades. The base LE, XLE, and Adventure trims feature Toyota's Entune Audio system. It uses a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, six speakers, AUX and USB 2.0 ports, voice recognition, Bluetooth, backup camera, and hands-free phone capability.

Higher up on the pecking order, the SE trim adds the Entune Audio Plus system with a built-in navigation system, SiriusXM satellite radio, Siri Eyes Free, HD radio, as well as traffic and weather updates. As trims go higher, more features are added, such as a 360-degree camera, heated steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and JBL sound system, but no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connectivity is available.

Practicality: 8/10

For being a small SUV equipped with a four-cylinder engine, the RAV4 has a decent towing capacity. FWD models have a maximum towing capacity of 1,500 lbs, while the Toyota RAV4 Adventure trim with AWD can lug along as much as 3,500 lbs with the optional towing package.

The more rugged Adventure trim has 6.5 inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel-drive, giving it a more impressive approach and departure angles of 28-degrees and 23-degrees.

The RAV4 also has adequate cargo space for its segment: 38.4 cubic feet behind the rear seating area, though when that's folded down, its cargo area expands to 73.4 cubic feet. A power liftgate as standard makes loading in cargo a tad more accessible, too.

The roominess continues with passenger room dimensions. The headroom comes in at a maximum of 39.8 inches for the front seats and 38.9 inches for the rear seats. Legroom is Amtrak-rivaling at 42.6 inches up front and 37.2 inches in the rear.

Styling & Design: 6/10

Along with the Mazda CX-5, the 2018 Toyota RAV4 to be one of the best-looking small SUVs on the market. It blends in nicely with Toyota's modern design language, and the Adventure trim features some athletic lines and fog lights that are reminiscent of the larger Highlander, 4Runner and Land Cruiser.

The RAV4 has comfortable, well-bolstered seats, an optional moonroof, and good visibility. But the interior materials are subpar and feel more chintzy than the competition, such as the Volkswagen Tiguan and Mazda CX-5. It's a significant sore point for the Toyota and makes it feel dated.

Driving Experience: 6/10

Even though it has competitive horsepower ratings and relatively average weight for the class, the Toyota RAV4 comes up towards the back of the pack. It also strains when asked to accelerate and struggles to keep up on hills. The interior also gets loud with engine noise. A Honda CR-V is better in this regard.

Its soft suspension does mean a supple, insulated ride in city driving and commuting. But that doesn't bode well for handling, which isn't as confident as a Ford Escape or Mazda CX-5.

Fuel Efficiency: 7/10

The non-hybrid Toyota RAV4 fuel economy is decent for the class. The EPA has rated it at 22 MPG city and 28 MPG highway.

The hybrid stacks up a lot better; despite having more power, it achieves 34 MPG city and 30 MPG highway.
