I got my Matrix used as a 25th birthday present to myself, and I'm as happy with it today as I was 12 years ago. Hoping to have it for another five–seven years! (Let's get to 20, baby!) It's spacious, comfortable, and reliable, and maintenance and repairs have been easy to keep up with.
Story
One time when I was camping in Florida, my tent failed in a rainstorm, and so I simply moved into the car. With the back seats down, there's a smooth flat-bed back there, just the right size for sleeping!
Pros
Toyota has a reputation for quality and longevity, and my Matrix does not disappoint. There is so much space inside; I moved a whole twin mattress set in it once along with extra boxes and furniture! There's lots of window space for increased visibility of the road. Dashboard controls are exactly in the right place for someone my size (average). Interior upholstery/ceiling/floors have held up so well. Engine components last extra-long as well -- I didn't have to replace the transmission until 160,000 miles -- and it's the only major repair this car has ever needed. The whole vehicle is set... Cons
The plastic door handles are flimsy, and I did have to replace them after they broke in the heat. Also, there's no hope keeping hubcaps from falling off (a common problem with Matrixes.).

I've had this auto since we purchased it new in 2004, and it has been a workhorse for my entire family. It is SO roomy and comfortable. This car has been the most reliable vehicle I have even owned, and it continues with very few (almost zero!) issues to this day. The car currently has over 230,000 miles! It gets decent gas mileage, too! The color and appearance have remained very true to when I bought it, even though it has been used to carry tools and equipment for many years. It's still that gorgeous candy apple red that it was when it was first purchased. The only drawback I can really see with the car is that there have been numerous recalls over the past few years. Story
We drove this car to Yosemite for vacation and then up over the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the ghost town of Bodie, Ca. The road to Bodie (at the time) was like a washboard, but the little Matrix made it with no difficulties other than our chattering teeth!
Pros
Long, consistent, dependable life! Solid construction.
Cons
Many recalls. Only adequate gas mileage.
