2009 Toyota Highlander Owner Ratings & Reviews

2009 Toyota Highlander - Reliable, fuel efficient, and easy to handle.
Overall, the 2009 Toyota Highlander is a great car. It did not come with all the extra features such as a sunroof or fog lights, but it was well worth the price. The Highlander is very flexible in what it can be used for. It is a great family car because it has lots of seating. The seats can fold down to allow for a large amount of storage space or to accommodate pets. It is also a good car for your daily commute. The Highlander is large enough that other drivers and especially big trucks do not try to bully you on the road, yet it is small enough that it can travel down narrow streets without much issue. Depending on the exact model that is purchased, it also has enough power to pull trailers and such given a tow kit. The Highlander is also versatile in who is able to comfortably oper... (more)
Story
I once took my friends out to a lake in the Highlander and my friend's car. We stayed there past dark and when we were on our way out of the lake area, we had some fun in a dirt parking lot. I veered off the main road into the dirt lot and started drifting and doing donuts in the car, and my friend's car followed. We drifted around for a couple of minutes and then returned to the road with no ... (more)
Pros
The top positive things about the Toyota Highlander are definitely its reliability, ease of use, versatility, power. I owned the Toyota Highlander for a full decade and in all of that time, it only broke down once (didn’t turn on). I have run over numerous potholes, hit many large bumps in the road pretty hard without any consequences. Its handling is exceptional. The power steering was implemented very well, the suspension is very good and the transmission makes for an extremely smooth ride. This allows for both new drivers and the elderly to drive the Highlander without much, if any, dif... (more)
Cons
The top negative things about the 2009 Toyota Highlander are the stock radio system, the bulkiness of the vehicle, and the vehicle’s poor handling in bad weather conditions. The sound system in the Toyota Highlander is okay, but the radio system is very finicky. When trying to adjust the volume setting with the knob, the volume tends to jump up and down almost at random. Sometimes twisting the knob does nothing for a few moments and then the sound is way too high. When turning the volume knob up, sometimes the actual sound volume goes down. This is very distracting while driving. The car i... (more)
2009 Toyota Highlander - A dream compared to our last few vehicles
My Highlander is a green color, although most often mistaken for gray. It has a nice body to it. Sleek sides, a slightly boxier front. It has three rows, which is a must for a family our size. I can fit all of my children and their car seats comfortably with room for one (very slim) other person to ride in the second row in the middle. It could use more trunk space, but even with four children, we make grocery pickups and any type of major shopping work by sometimes taking something out to put something new in. I love that the third and second row can be folded down in the event that we need to pick up a bigger purchase like a bed or table. It is convenient for sure. We purchased this car at already over 100,000 miles but you would never know it. The engine does not give away its age b... (more)
Story
One day I was rushing. My children were in the car with me and I was trying to get my oldest to school on time. Our street was under construction so I decided to use the alley in the back of my house and found myself needing to make a U-turn; this is nearly impossible in such a narrow alley but I attempted it anyway. I wind up scratching the back right side of my car along a very sturdy and st... (more)
Pros
It has three rows of seating. The second and third row fold down easily. There is control for air and heating that reaches all the way to the rear. It quickly warms/cools. Attractive design and exterior. And it rides smoothly.
Cons
The trunk space is limited. There is a driver side window recall.
