2002 Toyota Highlander Owner Ratings & Reviews

2002 Toyota Highlander - Reliable and Convenient
I was "sold" on the vehicle after watching a TV show review. I love that the vehicle has plenty of airbags for safety and that the SUV is built on a car frame which makes it more nimble.
The quality of the engine and the fact that I have over 175,000 miles and never had any issues is another reason I purchased a Toyota. I specifically bought an SUV to have to ability to "haul" a lot of things and also have room for passengers. I have moved furniture and boxes and even slept in the back with the seats down while camping. Being a 6-cylinder, it has great pep, which is essential for freeway driving. I am fine with the gas mileage of 23 mpg since I get everything else I want from the vehicle. And yes, it does look somewhat like a mini van and I have been asked if I have kids by people who ... Story
We backed into a drive-in movie theater, put the seats down in the back, lifted the back and watched the movie from within the car, lying on our stomachs.
Pros
The quality and the reliability are right up there on the list. Toyota has earned this reputation for a reason, because their vehicles keep going and going. I haven't ever had any engine issues. Functionality, for an SUV, is definitely the number one reason for buying in my case. I want the freedom to buy and transport a couch to my home if I want as well as have seating for 5 other people. The 6-cylinders make accelerating when needed a pleasure and allow for towing capability. I really like some of the extras it came with like running boards and roof rack. Controls are very intuitive; I ... (more)
Cons
The few drawbacks to this vehicle are the plastic parts like the door handles, visors and small compartment doors within the vehicle. They are cheaply made and do not withstand the test of time like the engine does. I have had the electric door window motor fail and the air conditioning control knob break. Also, the clear sealant coat on the exterior paint is pealing off in many places. With the vehicle being 14 years old, wear and tear should be expected. But then again if the engine can go for 400,000 hopefully the surrounding pieces can last too, or what's the point? The biggest drawbac... (more)
2002 Toyota Highlander - Highlander: a step towards excellence.
I would give my Toyota Highlander a 4 out of 5 stars. There are so many things to love about this car. Let's start with the features that I love. This is a good family car which is perfect because I have two little kids to cart around with me all the time. You can fit a family of five relatively comfortable. Unfortunately, this model does not have the third row, so five is the maximum number of occupants this car can hold. I also love that even though this is a family car, it still has a sun roof. I enjoy this because I am not quite ready to let go of my youth and this helps keep me young. Another thing that I love is the gas mileage. I am not sure on specifics, but it does way better than my Durango did. In addition, the seat warmers are amazing and work so well. They are a huge plus,... (more)
Story
We road tripped from Colorado to North Dakota in it last year. We were able to bring all of our luggage with us and still had room to spare in the back
Pros
Heated seats. Tan leather interior. Good gas mileage. 6 CD disk changer.
Cons
Lacking leg room for taller passengers. Only seats 5. No third row seating.
