2004 Toyota Corolla - Good for most car buyers.
We purchased this vehicle used from a friend. Everything I've heard about Toyotas being a reliable car were proven for us with this vehicle. It's a standard, so I'm the only one in our family who can drive the vehicle, but we knew that when we purchased. The seats are very comfortable with easy access to the trunk/fuel release. It has started up with no problem for the three years we've owned it and has good pick up. It is not a fast car, but it gets the job done. We purchased this as a second car when my husband and I were both working, and now it's the main mode of transportation for my young son and myself. I'd say this is probably a good car for most people but especially for college students or newly married individuals. It's fine for smaller babies, but once a child's legs have g... (more)
Story
I was driving back from visiting my sister in NY, and it was raining. We started to hydroplane, and the car was easy to control, and I was able to correct course with limited incident. We hit the guard rail, but the car only got a little scratch. I think, if I were driving a different car, it would have been much worse.
Pros
This car has good mpg, and can go 300+ miles on the 13-gal. tank. I like the way the dashboard is set up, and the location of the cup holders is well thought out. The headrests are comfortable and easy to take off. The trunk is a great size, and can easily fit three full-sized suitcases with room for other smaller items.
Cons
The fabric that was chosen for the seats wear easy and tend to create fuzz ball. The clock on the dashboard has started to go out, but that's probably to be expected for a car that's 10+ years old. The middle seat in the back does not have a seatbelt that is easy to access, especially if the seat is ever lowered to get to the trunk.
2006 Toyota Corolla - Quality Compact Car that Lasts
This car has almost 200,000 miles on it and it's still running really well. It has needed the standard repairs (brake pads, tires, oil changes), but nothing major.
The one problem I've had so far was when a random squirrel chewed through the fuel line. Because the car is made so the fuel tank isn't easily accessible, what would have been a cheap and easy repair cost almost $500.
The interior is very good quality for the price of the model. After ten years there are no lasting stains, tears, or bad wear on any of the upholstery. The outside is also pretty good, although the hubcaps are very low quality plastic that pop on to the wheel. They pop off really easily (highway driving) and are relatively expense to replace each time. Eventually I gave up and now have no hubcaps.
Story
Our best memories with this car are when we take our dog hiking. We throw down a blanket in the back seat and he hops in (90 lbs, so it takes some work) and he snuggle down for the ride. The best is when we get back and he's exhausted and falls asleep in the backseat, drooling on the blanket.
Pros
It has great fuel economy (40+mpg on the highway). The center console in the front has an additional car charger port, so both driver and passenger can charge their phones at the same time. It also has a 6CD changer, for all those CDs that nobody knows what to do with anymore.
The trunk has a safety mechanism in case anyone gets locked in there, and it's also accessible from the backseat when you fold the center armrest down.
It seems like a pretty compact car, but it's wide enough to fit a full 88key electric keyboard in the back, or a 90 lb dog!
Cons
The biggest con is probably the hubcaps. Other than that, the car is easy to maintain, and the parts are generally inexpensive when it does need a repair.
