1999 Toyota Corolla Owner Ratings & Reviews

1999 Toyota Corolla - Worse Toyota I've ever owned is still a great car
I've only ever owned Toyota cars. They're not for everyone, but if reliability, low maintenance and efficiency is what you are looking for, Toyota is tops. I bought this car new 20 years ago! It's the first and only new car I've ever owned (I had owned two used Toyota's before that: a Tercel and a Corolla). I was fresh out of college and had my first real job, so I figured, what the heck, time for my first new car. I have no regrets, but a few disappointments. First, I bought this car at the time many car makers were experimenting with water-based paints. My Corolla turned out to be one of those experiments. I only found out about 8 years later when the topcoat started to peal over the trunk and part of the roof. It continued to peal eventually reaching the paint, then the bare metal (... (more)
Story
I once held up traffic going over the Grapevine (Interstate 5, Tejon Pass) in the summer. It was hot so I had the A/C blasting, and as you know the Grapevine is a very steep climb. So, with me and three other passengers, the best my little Corolla could do was 45 miles an hour! More than a few fingers thrown my way that day.
Pros
Great mileage. Reliable. Low maintenance.
Cons
Adequate power. Won't win any beauty contests. Water-based paint didn't last long.
1999 Toyota Corolla - 99 Toyota Corolla - reliability defined.
The 99 Toyota Corolla. True to the Japanese manufacturer's history of manufacturing reliable vehicles, the 99' Toyota Corolla is one of the most by-the-numbers, non-offensive, well-priced sedans to this day. This car is not for the type of person that likes to show off their ride-- rather, this car is for the type of person that wants a dependable, well-built machine to get from point A to point B. The four-cylinder engine is average in terms of performance for its time, enough to get up to speed on busy highways. Upholstery is average, a faux velvet colored beige, with darker carpeted floors and accompanying floor mats. Said upholstery has lasted a ridiculously long time, too-- I've tacked on nearly 200k miles and only just now am I seeing standard wear and tear. Comfort may be an iss... (more)
Story
The only time I've experienced a true downside to the under-powered engine was on a trip to southern Oregon. There's a stretch heading south on i-5 where you have nearly a mile to trek up a gentle incline. Having two plus sized individuals, along with fifty pounds of hard drives in the back, sent the engine into its highest gear for a minute straight just to maintain 55MPH, but the reliability... Pros
Reliable. Cheap. Solid construction. Great gas mileage. Power steering/windows. Easy to repair. Practical vehicle.
Cons
Weak engine. Little luxury options. Low-ish leg room. No "WOW" factor.
