1999 Toyota Camry - A great reliable vehicle.
Overall we love our Camry. It has been a very reliable vehicle that is excellent at getting you from point A to B and back to A. It isn't the prettiest or sleekest of cars to own, and the interior leaves a little to be desired but that isn't what we are focused on in our car purchases. We got ours at about 100k miles, and have put almost another 100k on it since and have had little engine trouble. Some manageable repairs to the timing belt that were expected given mileage, but other than that with regular oil changes it runs like a champ. It gets moving at a decent pace for a 4 cylinder and has never had any troubles with over heating or anything of the sort. Given it's a Toyota we don't expect anything less than 350k out of it over the life, and it's still going great at a little over... (more)
Story
This vehicle is great for our windy highways, very stable and low to the ground with low flip risk.
Pros
Reliable engine, large back seat and trunk, easy maintenance, family friendly, decent gas mileage.
Cons
4 cylinder. Only ok gas mileage. A little over weirdly. Can't always fit in compact spaces. Timing belt, not a chain.
2003 Toyota Camry - A practical mid-sized sedan.
The 2003 Toyota Camry LE is a highly reliable, practical mid-sized sedan. It's not a bargain car, but is certainly not an overpriced luxury model. While some criticize that it is a boring or staid car, that is what a car should be. It gets from point A to point B with solid fuel efficiency, high reliability, and excellent safety features.
Story
I recently took my Camry on US Forest service Road 4390 in the Cascade Mountains to go hiking. The road was not well maintained and the Honda Civic in front of me gave up. But, I took it slow and dodged the huge divots in the dirt road and made it to the trailhead. Made it back down and the car hasn't fallen apart since then, which is always a good sign.
Pros
It has staying power. Mine is at 14 years and 115,000 miles with no significant problems encountered. It gets good gas mileage. While billed at 32 mpg highway, mine got 36 mpg highway when new and still gets about 34 highway. It's comfortable. Even the back seat has leg room. The trunk is surprisingly roomy and its squared shape is ideal for bulky items. Toyota is an easy company to deal with. Calls to their corporate number are answered promptly without long periods on hold. It has smooth breaking, smooth acceleration, and is relatively quiet.
Cons
I would have rather paid less. Has not impacted me, but it's such a common car, they get stolen for parts frequently.
