1998 Toyota 4Runner - Great size and easy driving
I love the size and storage space of the rear and trunk, and the fold-flat rear seats which make hauling big items easily. The driver seat is set like a sedan, which is different from other SUVs in the category. The leather seats add some luxury, and I love the CD/cassette set-up. Controls are easy to use, although sometimes were hard to reach while driving. The sound system is reasonably good. The heat and AC are strong, and the rear controls for climate are a plus, although I have never had to use it. The moon roof/sun roof is a nice option, although the car heats up quickly when it is not covered by the sliding partition. The 4Runner drives well, and is easy to turn around and handles most driving conditions well. The 4WD is easy to engage and disengage, and is effective and powerful.
Pros
I love the size of the 4Runner. It is comfortable enough to fit a group of people plus gear for long trips. The fold down rear seats that become flush with the trunk area is great for big items like furniture; I was able to move cross-country and back with all of my belongings in one car, which is impressive! The drivability for this size is wonderful; there is great visibility through the windows, and parallel parking on city streets is manageable. I always feel safe in the snow, and the 4WD handles terrible blizzards and poor road conditions wonderfully. The SUV sounds like it has good ... (more)
Cons
I actually do not like the sedan-style seating of the front seats. I wish they were slightly higher for a more vertical/truck style leg placement. The fuel economy is pretty low, around 18 mpg, which changes based on weather and driving conditions. The best it has been was 20.5, and the worst 16. The car could use some standard tinted windows; heat and cooling efficiency is not the best. The AC has gotten substantially warmer, meaning it will need to be replaced at some point. The rear seat space is sort of small, so passengers would need to be average/small to fit comfortably in the back.... (more)
