The 2005 Toyota 4Runner is a great all-around vehicle. I had always been opposed to SUVs in the past based on their gas-guzzling tendencies and excessive size, so no one was more surprised than I was when my life circumstances changed and an SUV became the vehicle best suited to meet my needs. I was attracted to the high build quality and reputation for reliability. I also wanted clearance, 4WD, and enough space in the cargo area to fit two dog crates. The 4Runner Limited delivers all of that plus leather, heated seats, a moon roof, and a roll down rear window! It's still going strong at 150,000 miles.
Story
As I mentioned earlier, I ended up having significant mechanical issues early on in my ownership of the vehicle. I was actually on a road trip in February from the south to the north eastern US. I had a bunch of pigeons in the back, as well as my crated dog, because I was headed to a hunting dog training event when my car broke down on the interstate. I ended up getting the vehicle towed and h... (more)
Pros
It has lots of cargo space for road trips, groceries, trips to the hardware store, and as previously mentioned, can fit two intermediate dog crates in the back. It also has multiple tie down locations for securing loads. The window on the fifth door has a roll down rear window. This is great for extra ventilation or for extending long cargo, like 2x4s out the window. The key fob even has a button to roll down rear window--great for when hands are full and you don't want to juggle holding items and opening the door. The moon roof is fantastic. It has leather seats and even better heated fro... (more)
Cons
The interior and electronics are outdated. It lacks an auxiliary input and an USB input, so I had to purchased a cassette adaptor to listen to my iPod. My previous vehicle had one, so it was a downgrade for me. While not terrible considering the size, it doesn't have great MPG. My specific vehicle was purchased used and turned out to be a lemon. While it works great now, having to replace the rear differential, transmission, computer, and more totaling $6,000 in parts and labor within six months of purchasing the vehicle was certainly a hard pill to swallow. The vehicle came with carpet ma... (more)

I purchased my used 2013 Toyota 4-Runner Limited 14 months ago, and I have not yet been disappointed. I love the heated leather seats, and it has 14 cup holders! The navigation system is very easy to use (in fact, I did not even have to look at the owner's manual!). The USB input is very handy, but I wish there were USB outlets for the passengers. It has third-row seating, but they are a little tricky to let up and down, so I usually leave them folded away. It is one of the best-looking vehicles on the road!
Story
When the seasons transition from winter to spring, my family and I love to roll down all of the windows, open the sunroof and crank up the Sirius XM radio and cruise backroads.
Pros
Fourteen cup holders. Electric receptacle in the back cargo area, which would be great for outdoor/tailgating use. Heated leather seats. Factory navigation system. Third row seating. Premium wheels. Sunroof. Back glass lets down. Premium factory speakers sound great!
Cons
Premium wheels are expensive to replace. No USB input for back passengers. Only 16.7 mpg.

This vehicle came in V6 and V8 options and various trim levels. The high-end is the Limited trim with leather interior, heated seats, and other nice features. Since this is my daily driver AND adventure vehicle I wanted something I'd be comfortable day in and day out, but very capable for the weekends.
Story
We recently took the 4runner down the gulf of Mexico to Padre Island Seashore. Driving on the beach was a blast and the 4runner more than handled it.
Pros
V8 option is fantastic. V6 is capable but can feel under powered. Resale is high due to Toyota 4runner reliability. Gas mileage is decent for an SUV.
Cons
Aesthetically, in stock form, it looks more like a soccer mom vehicle than a tried and true 4runner. Cabin noise can be loud.
