2004 Toyota 4Runner Owner Ratings & Reviews

2004 Toyota 4Runner - The Perfect 1st Car
My 4Runner was my first vehicle purchase. I did a lot of research before I bought it, and I couldn't be happier. The car's quality is amazing. The previous owner took great care of it, and it's held up for me as well. The only interior issues I have are a worn driver's seat and a dashboard cracked from the extreme Texas heat. The only thing I've had to do aside from routine oil changes is swap out the brake pads and rotors for the front tires. My car has over 165,000 miles on it, so if brake pads are my biggest issue that's fantastic!
Story
During the summer in Texas, I turn the A/C on full blast to see how long it takes for my passengers to start complaining about the cold! They usually don't last very long.
Pros
As a musician, I make frequent trips across Texas for shows. The 4Runner is perfect for me because the back seats fold down leaving plenty of cargo space for gear. I've fit my guitar amp, two of my guitars, my singer's amp, my singer's guitar, our full PA system, mic stands, etc all in the back and I still had room enough for my singer. And I could've even brought the drummer's gear too if I had tried! The A/C can handle 100+ degree Texas summers with ease. Even though I have the SR5, not the Sport model, it handles like a much smaller car. Very "zippy" for it's size. I was debating betwee... (more)
Cons
Its age (2004) and the plastic side paneling above tires that does not wear well.
2004 Toyota 4Runner - 4 Thumbs Up for Toyota 4Runner
My 4Runner has taken me places where other SUVs refuse to go. I've put 20,000 off-road miles on it on some of the roughest backcountry tracks in the American Southwest. Robbers Roost. The Maze. The Land of Standing Rocks. These are places that require a vehicle with superb handling characteristics, a powerful drivetrain, and brakes that you can bank on in wet, muddy, and snowy conditions. It's also got to be durable and able to take some hard knocks without starting to rattle or shimmy when the going gets rough. On every one of these counts I give top marks to the 4Runner, with bonus points for good looks and comfort for passengers and driver alike.
Story
I managed to get to the site of Charles Manson's hideout in Death Valley after everyone including the Park Service rangers told me the old jeep track was impassable to vehicles.
Pros
The 4Runner has higher clearance than many competing vehicles and this was a major factor in my decision to buy it. It also has true four wheel drive with a locking differential instead of the "all wheel drive" common on many SUV's. For rough conditions off the pavement, there is no substitute for true FWD. Another plus of the 4Runner is that the rear interior is just long enough for two adults to sleep in with the seats folded flat as long as they are no taller than about 6'. This is a real advantage when you need to stop for the night out in the boonies but it's too late (or you're too ... (more)
Cons
The only real drawback of the 4Runner is the gas mileage. I can't count on more than 20 mpg average. That is the trade-off for the capability of going just about anywhere a road will take you.
