1995 Toyota 4Runner - Great Long Term Purchase
The Toyota 4Runner is a great long-term investment. The truck has exceptional room and is still incredibly reliable to this day. It's just about twenty years old and we have never had a serious issue with it. The engine has always worked flawlessly and the only money we've had to put into it has been normal maintenance/wear and tear costs. The truck is capable of carrying very heavy loads. And with how far it is off the ground you really will feel like a king of the road, which will lead you to feel very safe as well! With a few modifications this truck could be exceptional for mudding and activities like that as well. Christmas trees and other long objects like that can easily fit inside the truck without a need to use the roof rack. The included sunroof is also great for some leisure driving along the beach, or a similarly nice and relaxing environment. The truck drives incredibly smoothly given it's age - newer cars I've driven are very bumpy on the same roads! The cornering capabilities are also very good and I've never felt like I was in a bad situation while cornering.
Me and my son were dropping my oldest son back off at the University of Florida, which is in northern Florida, whereas we are very far South. My younger son didn't have much experience driving yet, so on the way back I allowed him to drive most of the way. It was a great learning experience for him and was very fun teaching him how to drive.

My top five positive things to say about this truck are definitely things that'd make anyone want to buy it. The most important of these five would definitely be that there's never been any performance issues. This truck has always met my expectations and has never broken down or had an issue that a mechanic needed to fix ASAP. My second compliment has to be in regards to the actual size of the truck. It's very large and can accommodate heavy loads, also the backseats fold down for added trunk space. Additionally this truck is very high off the ground. Which I feel like is the 3rd most imp... It's very large and can accommodate heavy loads, also the backseats fold down for added trunk space. Additionally this truck is very high off the ground. Which I feel like is the 3rd most important thing. It allows you to make minor modifications so that you could go mudding or any other similar activity. You also end up feeling very safe being above the other drivers. With just two pros left it's hard to pick what the two more relevant ones will be. The truck drives very very smooth even on bumpy roads. Compared to newer cars the difference is actually insanely overwhelming. My last compliment has to be the sunroof. While such a minor addition, it actually adds a lot to the vehicle. Trucks are mainly associated with work or towing. However with a sunroof this truck works out very well for leisure driving.
Well the interior is very old and falling apart. Of course this is normal, but it's actually very ugly even in new condition. The console area also doesn't allow for much storage and is actually very cramped. The seats can feel very awkward at times as well, but this is of course still an interior issue. The truck's maintenance costs are fairly high, and since it is so old it requires them fairly often. All in all this isn't a very serious issue, but it's a problem regardless. One of the major issues however, is how often the truck will hydroplane in wet conditions. It's happened to me fai... (more)

One of the major issues however, is how often the truck will hydroplane in wet conditions. It's happened to me fairly often and I'm fairly experienced driving this vehicle. I worry about how an inexperienced driver would handle that situation! Another fairly serious issue would be that the trunk door ends up being at a very awkward height and you could easily slam your head into it. I'm very tall, but I've had people complain about this previously as well. The trunk door doesn't lift all the way up on its own - just to the height that you put it at, so it's common that someone of any height could hit their head into it. Finally my last complaint is actually about the storage space! Because you have to put the backseats down in order to store anything. There really isn't much room as far as standard storage space goes.

One thing I really like off the bat is the reliability of the truck. It truly has the old Toyota reliability people often talk about when it comes to their trucks. My brother and myself bought it at an auction, and we really didn't even plan to buy it. The bids were going really slow on it so we put one in for $700 and won the truck. At the time of getting it, it was running on five cylinders, and the clutch was getting weak. Drove it for a couple weeks off and on without knowing it was running on five, yet it still ran pretty good. The clutch lasted a good 6,000+ miles before going out, and it was slightly starting to slip when we got it when you hit 3,000 RPMs. We've replaced the spark plugs shorty after getting it, changed the fluids, checked the belts, replaced the air filter, got ... We bought it with 208,000 miles on it, it just hit 217,000. Over 9,000 miles since and no issues at all. I drive it to work 60+ miles round-trip and it does great! So fun to drive with a manual transmission as well. I love the truck.
When we had a ton of snow this winter climbing some hills out in the woods and rallying it in the snow. It was a blast romping it around the snow and climbing these huge hills that had no tracks in them with very fresh soft snow. Our 32" Mickey Thompson tires pulled through.

Toyota reliability is so true when it comes to their older trucks. Look on the road when you drive next and you'll notice a lot of them still running. Much longer than anything else. The only thing that competes is old Hondas, which we also have too. Feels like an actual truck. Body on frame like they should be. I don't like all these crossover vehicles coming to the market. No personality and they're just cars. Extremely fun to drive as a daily especially with big tires and a little lift. Manual is more fun. Great for sleeping in on lunch work breaks or camping.

Kind of gutless... The manual transmission helps a lot with that. The auto is really bad. It has that old-school off-road slow truck charm, so it's not a huge deal. Interior is pretty basic. Personally, I like that for off-road vehicles but a lot of people probably won't. Not great on gas, but it's an old slow V6 with big tires and body armor. It's a lot better on gas than my 2000 Nissan Xterra 4WD automatic, however.
