The Subaru has been a reliable car that works for city driving as well as for long trips. We like to go skiing and hiking, and it has been useful for mountain roads. With appropriate tires, we feel safe driving in the snow -- more so than we have in previous compact cars. It had somewhat high mileage for its age when we purchased it, 60,000 miles, but has never broken down on the roadside. We have not had any major parts fail, though we have had some issues with check lights turning on the dashboard where the repair shop could not find anything wrong to fix. Following the recommended serving schedule, it has worked fine. It has generous trunk space and can fit a family of five relatively comfortably. It would get tight if you have tall people in the back seat or children in car seats. ... (more)
Story
Great for family trips! We drove across three states on all kinds of roads with the family in the car. Equally comfortable on mountain roads and small coastal roads as it was on freeways.
Pros
The back-up mirror is incredibly useful. I feel much safer parking when it is there. It feels sturdy and relatively safe. I like the room in the trunk and the four-wheel drive. The large motor makes it easy to accelerate onto the freeway.
Cons
It does not have all the safety features that newer models have, like sensors that warn you when you are too close to objects. I also find the emergency brake to be non-intuitive.

The Subaru Outback has a good cabin space for driving around with passengers and it still has lots of storage, too. The roof rack is good for carrying extra items and the car has enough power to handle the extra weight. The all wheel drive is nice for going off the paved road and always handles well in the snow.
Story
One time after snowboarding I drove my car up a 4 wheeling trail and climbed a hill climb that it could barely do. It took a few tries, but I made it to the top and was honestly surprised the car could do it.
Pros
There is lots of room inside for people and storage. The roof rack makes it easy to haul items that won't fit inside the car. It has enough power to handle whatever task is thrown at it. The all wheel drive is great in the snow and any time the vehicle is off the pavement. Maintaining the vehicle isn't too difficult and it has enough ground clearance to go where most small trucks can go.
Cons
The gas mileage is less than similar vehicles because of the all wheel drive. Subarus in this year range are known for head gasket issues and this vehicle has been no different. If the all wheel drive goes out the vehicle can be undividable, but in a truck if the four wheel drive goes out a lot of times 2 wheel drive is fine still.
