2016 Subaru Outback - Luxury Utilitarian
Went looking for a new car with the mindset of it being a future family car, and a more practical and fuel efficient choice than the '02 WRX that it would be replacing. After much research, I had my heart set on an AWD CX-5 fully teched out and optioned. Unfortunately for the Mazda, the dealership also sells Subarus, and being that I really liked my WRX, felt that the Outback was worth a test drive. To quote the sales man "The worst part about test driving an Outback, is that you will forget about the other cars, and will be driving away with an Outback." He was right. Test drove, and quickly went to talking color, pricing, and options. My wife and I drove away with a lovely 2.5i (the non-turbo edition) red with cream interior Outback, and have enjoyed every minute owning it.
Story
Drove the Outback up to the family cabin during a heavy snow storm and did not lose grip, or have any issues the entire time. The conditions didn't phase the outback in the least... which really is no surprise since in the winter Subarus out number any other make in the area.
Pros
For being a 2.5 naturally aspirated engine, the Outback has a lot of oomph and does well with the mountain passes that it sees daily on my commute. The ride is smooth, high enough for off-roading, and very nice for traffic. The cabin is roomy, comfortable, and well laid out. While many will claim that the infotainment system is horrible, I find that it is one of my favorite things about the car. It is very intuitive, unobtrusive, and with the base sound package installed puts the Bose system in the Mazda to shame.
Cons
Subaru still suffers from the same constrictive tailgate design as my '02 WRX, so while the back end is very spacious, the opening is not. For example, a 4ft wide piece of plywood can lay flat in the back, but you wont be able to get it in since the opening blocks some of that width.
2.5 engine does have enough oomph, but I do wish I had sprung of the 3.5 Turbo. There have been a few instances where the extra acceleration would have been highly useful.
2014 Subaru Outback - Good deal
This car has is a lot of bang for your buck. My plan was to buy some kind of wagon or crossover or small SUV for my next car. When I finally was ready to purchase a vehicle, I settled on either a Volkswagen wagon or the Subaru Outback. Both vehicles were really impressive and honestly, in a similar price range but the Subaru Outback seemed to have more included features, and I was also attracted to the idea that it would likely have better long-term reliability. I tend to keep vehicles for a long time so that would be a major consideration for me. I found the Outback to be a nice driving car with surprisingly good handling and better gas mileage than I expected. In addition the amount of interior space is deceiving and impressive. My old car was a mid sized SUV that to all appearances ... (more)
Story
Driving up the California coast from Morro Bay to San Francisco. We drove thru Big Sur, Carmel, Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz and Half Moon Bay.
Pros
Lot of value for your money. Great reliability. Lot of interior space.
Cons
I wish I didn't get the black paint. A little slow from a dead stop.
