2010 Subaru Outback - Fell in love with Subaru
My 2010 Subaru Outback was my first Subaru, and the first practical car I purchased as an adult. I specifically chose the six-speed manual and base engine trim to save money & gas. Overall, I love this car. Large enough for any weekend trips, bike trips, kayaks, and even a pop-up camper. Great gas mileage for the size, partially due to the small engine & manual transmission. I have (proudly) rolled over 100,000 miles on this car (more than twice any other car I've owned), and it shows no signs of stopping. If I ever need another car, it will be a Subaru.
Story
Taking my two dogs out to the park in the rain while my house was being viewed by potential buyers. The Outback was large enough that I could just open the hatch and hang out for the hour with my dogs in the car, without anyone getting too antsy.
Pros
Great gas mileage - low 30s on the highway, high 20s in the city. It is comparable to sedans of the same model year. Great cargo capacity - I've been able to fit multiple bikes inside, Christmas trees, ambitious Ikea trips, etc. Recently, I installed a trailer hitch, and the Outback has been able to pull my 1,000 lb. pop-up camper with no trouble. Large 'trunk' area, and storage under the floor of the trunk. It handles snow, rain, ice, whatever with ease.
Cons
Idle speed control was an issue early (about a year into ownership). Rarely, I would stall the engine if my A/C was on and if I was decelerating and pushed the clutch in too late (<1000rpm). Occasionally, at stops, the engine stuttered to maintain idle if the A/C was on. This was addressed by a recall engine calibration update. I was completely satisfied with this update. Now, getting on in years (seven years old), the Outback has some heat shield rattle at around 3000 rpm. Mostly noticeable when engine braking and during cold starts.
