I have had this car for about 2 years now, and it is, far and away, the best car that I have ever owned. Since I live in the North, we can get some pretty brutal winters, but no matter what Mother Nature throws at me, the Outback can go right through it. I've replaced brakes, exhaust and the alternator. Even at fifteen years old, it's still in great shape. It has a few rust spots of course, but that's to be expected when you live in a place that salts the roads. Once, I used this car, to pull out a Honda of similar make. The torque was amazing. The Honda was hopelessly stuck, and the Subaru pulled it right out like it was nothing, It has a smooth ride, heated seats and mirrors, and an excellent sound system. Also, being a hatchback,, there's always plenty of room in the back for grocer... (more)
Story
We drove it all through the woods during the winter and wet months and never once got stuck.
Pros
It's all-wheel drive, it has an exceptional amount of space for hauling, and it handles great in the winter.
Cons
It can be a little pricey to have it repaired.

This car is great for off-roading and general unpaved traveling; this car will get you anywhere. Unfortunately with that came a number of repairs.
Story
We got through some major ruts in the middle of a country road. The car at one point was teeter-tottering on a bump of land, but it still got over that and to our destination.
Pros
The vehicle has great clearance, and AWD is very nice. The gas mileage isn't bad. The hatchback is nice if you have camping/hiking/fishing/etc. Gear. Our dog loved the hatchback as well with plenty of room to lay down. We bought the stick shift and really enjoy driving that, especially in the back country where you hit major puddles and mud.
Cons
The repairs were almost monthly at times. First it was just the headlights - this vehicle takes a specific type of headlight and burns through anything else in a matter of weeks. After that the head gasket blew, which isn't uncommon for a car with a lot of miles, but I had barely put any on it when this happened. After awhile we experienced a major oil leak (oh, this car does actually burn oil, even when there's no leak). That oil leak probably lead to the next series of repairs within the engine. The brakes went bad fairly quickly as well.
