Subaru Legacy Owner Ratings & Reviews

1998 Subaru Legacy - 20 years and it's still going!
I love this car! I know it's on it's last couple of years but sure wish Subaru was still making them! This is the 4th one I've had! (Not due to any breakdown.) The Outback is okay, but the Legacy is closer to the ground and gets better gas mileage, and believe it or not, you can jam more stuff into it -- camping, moving, winter driving, you can do it all. With studded snow tires, if you can't drive a Legacy in it, no one should be out in it. This car is at 190k with original engine and transmission, and at this point, I'll drive it until it drops as it doesn't make sense to put the cash in to replace either. Simple, consistent maintenance: that's all it takes to keep these running.
Story
Just this summer, as I know this car is ending its lifetime, I drove across the state with a hatchback of fresh apples, open windows, music blasting, warm sun, lavender on the dashboard: that's got to be one of the most typical, but great, Pacific Northwest summer experiences.
Pros
It's still got great gas mileage. It's roomy, and packable -- the rear seats fold forward, and the bench of the rear seat even folds up so the whole back is open. (With roof racks, you can travel for months.) The original parts of these cars were always good.
Cons
The replacement parts are now hard to get for the older models -- and expensive! -- particularly for the interior pieces: replacing the window controls was expensive just for the parts. The entire dash has to be removed to service any of the most basic interior parts. The suspension fairly consistently breaks down, and it's not that comfortable of a ride, as an older vehicle.
1993 Subaru Legacy -
Super safe, extremely reliable. The parts are of good quality, and the vehicle build makes it easy to fix. We have been able to look up most issues we've encountered on YouTube and figure out how to fix them ourselves! The car has almost 250,000 miles on it, and (other than having to do standard maintenance) the engine still sounds great and is still going strong! The engine has lots of power, and accelerates quickly, yet fuel consumption is low enough to only need about $20 every other week! The interior is ergonomic and spacious enough to fit five regular people in the seats, while a full-grown adult could easily sit in the trunk space (which is open to the rest of the interior and we have done this!) Overall, really a top-notch vehicle! Subaru has got their stuff together!
Pros
Fuel economy is awesome and safety ratings are very high. Maintenance is simple, affordable, and fast.
Cons
A/C unit ran out of fluid and is unusable. Could use an actual fold-out/fold-up seat with a safety harness in the trunk space.
