I love my Subaru Forester. We originally purchased it when we were expecting our first child, as we knew we would need a family-friendly vehicle. We live in Colorado and this car handles very well in the snow. Subaru is a very popular brand in this state and one we felt we could depend upon.
Story
The first trip we took with the Subaru Forester was to Santa Fe, New Mexico. It handled very well and we felt that we got great gas mileage during the entire trip.
Pros
The Subaru Forester has a large trunk and gets great gas mileage. I have about 50,000 miles on mine at the moment and have not had any issues so far. It's easy to maintain. It doesn't have any blind spots, which is important to me when I'm driving my two children around town. It handles very well in the snow and we don't even need to put snow tires on it.
Cons
I would recommend the Subaru Forester, but I would personally purchase a V6 model in the future. The four cylinder doesn't have a lot of pick-up when the car is full of passengers and luggage. I also had a problem with my dashboard compartment that broke, but it might have been because I was storing too many things in it.

2014 Subaru Forester - Great car. I would buy it again.

This is a great car for the mountains. I've never gotten it stuck, and the AWD is awesome for the winter. Clearance is great. I'll take my car almost anywhere my husband will take his truck. I do have the hill assist (X mode), which I would highly recommend if you are planning to drive in inclement weather as it helps when going slow to ensure you can pay 100% of your attention to the road and not have to worry about the speed too.
Story
We accidentally took it down a mountain bike trail one day thinking it was a road. The looks on biker's faces were hilarious. But goes to show how well it performs.
Pros
Heated seats. Trunk space. Fold down seats. All-wheel drive. X mode.
Cons
Poor acceleration. Lots of window cracks stemming from defroster.
