I love mine. But like any other vehicle, it's got it's quirks. Some rattles after a while, but it's built by Toyota so you know it's going to be reliable. I have an 06, so I'm sure they've worked some of the bugs out of them over the years. It is a compact, so "safe" could be interpreted in different ways. Against an Excursion - not good. Most scenarios, probably just like any other compact. Does have plenty of airbags though! It really is a fun car, and you'll pull between 20 and 25 miles to the gallon. Close to 30 if you spend a lot of time on the highway. You aren't going to win many drag racing contests, so if that's what you want, buy something else. All in all, I think it's well worth the money.
Story
I was in in a collision with my 2008 Scion tC where I t-boned a Honda that ran a stop sign in front of me at the speed of near 25 mph on impact and the airbags deployed while I was belted in and I didn't need to see a medic unit take me to the ER. I never realized just how safe the Scion tC is but since I brought one and drove one I found out it is one of the safer vehicles on the road today!
Pros
Reliable as can be. My tC never once failed to start. Rain, sleet, snow, -10 degrees, 112 degrees, that car never complained once, never broke down, and overall I never worried about something randomly breaking under the hood as long as I didn't do anything stupid behind the wheel and kept up with maintenance. As a starter car especially as a starter manual car it was actually kind of fun. Low end torque made it a zippy car to chug along on local roads. Sure it doesn't have much to offer in terms of going fast and it has all the downsides of being a low powered Front wheel drive car, but t... (more)
Cons
I felt like every drive was a commute unless I found the windiest of back roads because no matter how hard I pushed it, there was nothing there after the low end torque wore off and it just made itself feel slow. It's cramped for more than two people even though it happily tricks you into thinking you can actually put 4-5 people in there. The only community you're usually going to find for this are a bunch of sideways hat swag fags, and middle-aged or older folk . I never once met a tC owner who was someone I wanted to have a real conversation with, but that's just my experience. It's not ... (more)

As a young professional I was looking for a sporty looking, fuel efficient car to get me to and from work and also for weekend trips out of town. The car is perfect for a young couple or single young professionals, all the options (like power windows, etc) are already taken care of, options like adding a spoiler or additional lights are very nice, the hatch door allows you to fit large loads like a drum kit or camping equipment. The interior is not luxurious, but it is classy and more than enough for my needs. I was not very interested in my car being super fast, more interested in reliability. Additionally, over ten years the design of the car aged gracefully and does not look like an old car compared to current models. I looked at many cars in the same year and same price range and t... Story
Even though it's not a particularly fast/powerful car, I took it down route 101 from Oregon to California and driving along the ocean with the windows down and the sun roof open, I felt like I was in a car commercial and it is still one of the best "drives" of my life.
Pros
I requested an iPod connection, so having several gigs of music was great for long trips. The moon-roof was a really nice perk (I enjoy opening it when driving on the coast) and the gas mileage was great.
Cons
Tall passengers complained about legroom and headroom.
