2005 Saturn Vue - Reliable and Served Well, Mostly, Except For a Year of Hell
This car has served my family well for most of the seven years that we've had it. I've used it for long out-of-state trips and for all kinds of kid-schlepping to their various activities and around-town errands. Gas mileage is decent. It's a small SUV, so it's easy to park and negotiate parking lots. It has quite a bit of storage space still and the seats fold down so I can haul large objects. I have three sons and we all fit fine in this car. But I had a solid year of hell when something was very wrong and no mechanic in town could find the problem. Many things were replaced due to "codes being thrown" that, while maybe the code was being thrown, nevertheless didn't fix the problem. After spending thousands repairing everything the mechanics suggested at MANY different shops i... (more)
Story
We live on dirt roads and during rains it gets to be deep mud on all roads so it becomes a matter of picking which muddy road bears the least risk of getting stuck in. Last summer after a very heavy storm we had to go to town as our power was out (which makes our well not work so no water in the house) so we had to drive on the muddy roads with a good chance of getting stuck and having to be ... Pros
My car is pretty standard so no real extra features or anything. I like that it's small and easy to maneuver. Gas mileage is decent. It fits my whole family just fine. I can haul things with it. I can drive it in the bad muddy roads we get in my area when it rains. For the most part it's been very reliable.
Cons
There was the Year of Hell when something was very wrong yet no mechanic could find it. It shook very bad at idle, the accelerator would "jump" under my foot, have "flat spots", engine light was on, yet no one could find the problem. It would just die. Once it took me seven tries of it dying each time, just to get out of a store parking lot. This was literally the day I got it back from the dealer who found no problem. Eventually, it got so bad it just stopped responding to anything (gas or brake or steering) and I had to abandon it.
2005 Saturn Vue - Good family car
This car was purchased when I was on a long multi-state road trip and my car broke down, and I decided it wasn't worth fixing. Since the purchase, it has taken us through many states and to all the events and errands a family does. It's been reliable and good for every purpose and need we've had regarding transportation.
Story
Probably it was how happy my child was that I really did purchase the car he wanted.
Pros
The price was good. The only financing I was able to get without a job was to use my credit card that had a large available credit line. This car just fit within that amount. (Later when I got home from my trip, I had someone co-sign on a low interest loan and then paid the credit card off completely.) So I liked that it was affordable. I like the color (white), as we live where it's very hot at times, and white is a cooling color, and it goes with everything and is a neutral. The car has good appearance. Also my nine-year-old son picked it, so I was glad to get the car he wanted.
Cons
For about nine months, it had a bunch of problems that no auto shop nor the dealer could diagnose or solve. It was a horrible, trying, expensive, and worrisome bad time. After endless hassle and expense and worry, it was found to be a faulty computer. But I wouldn't wish that nine months on anybody, and it largely negates the total reliability and ease and happiness I've had with it otherwise.
