2006 Saturn Relay - Good car, does the job
I've enjoyed having a Saturn Relay. I have had extended family living in my house along with my two kids and it really held up over the ten years we've had it. Fantastic for a large family. Great for a long road trip with the family. I have the DVD player and screen in the back to entertain fussy children during longer car rides. Besides the rear sliding doors and the rear fold down seats (which can get stuck), the car has held up pretty well. No structural problems, very little mechanical issues over that time frame. No major repair work necessary. It's been on several road trips and it's help up well. The car handles great. Probably not the best gas mileage, but not too bad. It's a shame that they don't make them anymore.
Story
Not so much fun, but certainly memorable. I was driving around with my toddler daughter in the middle seating area in her car seat. I went around a turn and the sliding door just up and opened, and nearly fell off. It had gone off its track. I had to reach back and hold the car seat in place while I stopped the car safely in the middle of the road. Uncool to drive around with a toddler right n... (more)
Pros
I really enjoyed how well the car has held up. No major repair work needed in over a decade of several long family road trips and the beating it has taken from several children. I like the setup of the car in terms of seating and spacing. The drink holder area is great for my needs. Maybe a small thing, but not all cars have that so I like it. Plenty of storage space. The entertainment system in the back is great for keeping kids occupied on those longer trips. The car handles great. I like how sturdy the car is, for the most part.
Cons
Rear sliding doors seem to break easily.
Fold down seats can get stuck.
2005 Saturn Relay - Old Faithful
We bought this vehicle new in early 2005 and have driven it across the country several times. It's a terrific road trip and family vehicle. The removable and/or foldable seats in the back and middle rows have allowed the van to grow with our family and changing needs, from having babies in car seats right up to having teenagers with gear to haul. 2005 Was the first model year for the Relay, so there were a few "growing pains," but these were quickly and efficiently handled at the dealership(s). This has been a solid purchase for us.
Story
Best night at the drive-in movies - we opened the lift gate and turned the rear to the screen for the earlier (kid-friendly) feature and then shut the lift gate and turned the car forward for adults to watch the later film while the kids slept in the far back. Perfect!
Pros
Things we love about this vehicle
- still getting good mileage even after 10+ years and over 170K miles (21/gal city and 29/gal highway).
- Very reliable!
- The body styling is classic, and doesn't look 'dated' even after a decade
- very spacious interior (great for a family of tall people)
Cons
Things we don't love as much
- power sliders were only really useful for the first 7 years. After that, sensors wore out and the repair/replacement didn't seem worth it.
- Side trim on doors has always been a bit loose at the ends
- after 8 years, the gas gauge is no longer very accurate once it gets under 1/4 tank.
2005 Saturn Relay - Family minivan
I think had I bought this minivan new I would have liked it a lot more. It was almost ten years old and had had some damage done to it previously, even though the seller swore it wasn't wrecked. Overall, I'd say it was ahead of its time. DVD players in back, automatic sliding doors, keyless entry, lots of bells and whistles for a 2005. I have had a few problems with it and have had to fix it a few times.
Story
I remember driving it to Stephenville for a festival and turning around that night and driving back home. And then making the six-hour drive again the next morning.
Pros
I like that it is all automatic, including sliding doors and automatic windows. The controls are also pretty advanced for the year model. It is pretty roomy for my big family.
Cons
Since I bought this car used (and not from a reputable dealer), I can't necessarily attribute the shortcomings to the vehicle itself. I have had to replace the shifting cable and a number of other repairs.
