The Nissan Xterra was exactly what I was looking for when I was deciding on a new vehicle. I got the Sport model which I think is the lowest level package but it has everything I need. The vehicle has four wheel drive that can be engaged while traveling. The skid indicated picks up on the slightest slide and it has been helpful during winter months while traveling on black ice surfaces. The back is the perfect size for my dog once I remove the cargo tray. The removal and re-installation of the cargo tray is very easy. I just have to unscrew two screws. It does drive like a truck because it is on a Nissan Frontier platform so I would not characterize this as a luxury SUV. The vehicle is also surrounded by airbags. There are curtain bags in the back. Story
My dog and I drove down the entire east coast of the United States together last year. We hit all kinds of weather but the vehicle handled it all with ease. My dog is a pit bull so it is hard to find lodging on the road sometimes. We slept at rest stops in the back together. I was able to put out my sleeping bag and he was able to sleep on his bed. Pros
One The positive things about this vehicle include the four wheel drive. It helps to get through winters in New York. Being able to turn on the feature while in motion is also very helpful at times especially when there is little notice to rough terrain. The storage capacity of this vehicle has also been a great perk of ownership. The back seats lay flat to create more storage space. There is enough room in the back to transport an assembled propane grill! The roof racks are very sturdy and make transport easy. The running boards make for easy elderly access. Cons
There are a few cons to this vehicle. The back doors are oddly shaped. The way the doors are attached sort of causes a narrow opening. This makes it hard for a regular sized adult to get in and out of the vehicle. As mentioned above, the factory installed headlights are very bright. While I appreciate it, other drivers do not. It could also be that they head lights are higher than a car so they are in the oncoming traffic's line of vision. The gas mileage really sucks. The listed mileage is 15 city and 20 highway. I bought the xterra because my daughter had one and loved it. It is wonderful for shopping, small enough to fit in a regular space but large enough to hold all of your purchases. I have a pit bull who gets carsick but she can ride in the back and look out the windows .There is room enough for her to lay down. Mine is the cheapest model so I did install side ramps. I just moved and had to travel back and forth several times and it's a comfortable long distance vehicle, plenty of room for coffee cups and bags of junk food. My model has no extras so the upkeep is minimal. It is great to drive on the beach, too! All of your fishing gear will fit in back and your rods on the roof! It's good in snow and sand!
Story
When I moved, the dog barked the whole way across the Bay Bridge. I'm assuming she either saw the water below or the cars on the other side.
Pros
Easy to drive, height makes it easy to see around you. Seats fold down for more loading potential.
Cons
Gas mileage isn't all that great.
