I purchased this car about 5 years ago with 100k miles on it. So far, I've had to replace: timing belt (wore out), fog lights (burned out), A/C fan (burned out), leaf springs (1 snapped), head gasket (coolant leak), front grill (plastic pins holding it broke off), 4 small suspension parts...I forgot what they were called. I maintain the vehicle regularly, but a lot of parts appear to be cheap and fall apart. Especially the plastics, plenty of rattles and squeaks on every bump. Bumpers are also poorly built and fading. In the 2 years I've had the vehicle, it has cost me about $3,000 in repairs on top of the regular maintenance. Great off-road (Can't stress that enough) but poor quality parts make it less appealing.
Story
My buddies and I went to a place called "The Black Hole." This place has trails that go for miles. On this day, my friend was with me (he had a jeep Cherokee). We were rolling along and then we came upon the area known as the black hole. There is a mud pit that is crazy after it rains. My buddy tried to go charging through the pit and, of course, he got stuck. So the best part of the stor... (more)
Pros
Powerful and productive 4.0 liter combined with a lot of ground clearance and 4WD for off-roading. 285/75/16 tires fit without modifications increasing ground clearance to 12". Also, a great thing about this vehicle is that it's not unibody. It's truly body on frame. This truck looks very sporty as well, and I like the curvy design. The raised roof with stadium seating is really cool as well. The rooftop cargo area is icing on the cake.
Cons
Downsides are all cosmetic. I moved to Florida in 2003, and the sun has ruined the plastic covered bumpers and the fascia under the wipers. The door side moldings and fender trim has also suffered under the hot Florida sun. This vehicle has never been garaged, and the plastic does not hold up well in the sun. I am planning to have all the plastic trim removed, painted and reinstalled. I suspect I will spend $500 - $750 for this. The front grill looks absolutely horrible due to sun and environmental damage, so I will have it painted as well.

2001 Nissan Xterra - I love my Xterra.

First off my Xterra looks nice. It's not big and bulky but very chic. It looks as if its ready for off road or a night on the town. I love the room in the back...I show dogs, and there is plenty of room for my equipment and dogs. It has a very smooth ride and best thing is when and if I go off road the 4x4 is amazing. I'm never worried about getting stuck...it not only gets the traction but has the torque to pull me out. I also love the comfort of the seats. Makes those long drives to show much easier. I like the cosmetic roof racks, side steps and the contrast to the sleek body. For an SUV, it gets great gas mileage. Doesn't require a ton of maintenance. I swear it'll go forever with just the basics. I should know. I've put a good 6,000 miles on it in just two weeks time. I also like ... (more)
Story
It was an out door dog show...raining...the parking field was basically a mud hole. I watched so many others get stuck using wood to try and gain some traction. I was a little nervous, as it was the first time I was in a predicament like this with my Xterra. I shouldn't have been. Popped it in four wheel and just sailed out of there.
Pros
The cargo area is just the right size for everything. The looks, reliability, fuel economy, comfortable seating, and great handling. Fits my family needs while fitting my business needs.
Cons
Only the two...short leg space in backseat and high up cargo area.
