2009 Nissan Versa - Could have done worse, likely could have done better
Given its size, I think the fuel economy for this car could have been at least a little bit better. It gets garbage mileage in the city, and variable enough mileage on the highway that it's hard to rate it as "good" overall. I like that it's a subcompact, though, and able to make tight turns. It can hold a decent amount in the hatchback trunk and with the back seats folded down, but it would be able to hold a tremendous amount more if its back seats could fold all the way down, like they can in a Honda Fit. I like the roominess of the interior given the size of the car.
Story
I like having a stick shift in Michigan winters, because I feel like it gives me a little more control over things.
Pros
I like the roominess of the interior and the amount of stuff that can be packed into the car. I'm generally pleased with how much I can fit in the trunk. I am a bigger person, and as a joke, I tried to fit myself into the trunk to see if it really was big enough to hold a body. Indeed it was! As a graduate student and someone who has to transport a large quantity of stuff from time to time, I've been very pleased overall with the cargo-carrying capacity of my car.
Cons
This is more a quirk of my particular car rather than Nissan Versas in general, but the fact that it was manual everything got more annoying over time. More than anything, I miss auto-locks and cruise control. I think manual windows have some merit, and I know a manual transmission can improve fuel economy, even if only slightly. The only other big negative was the fuel economy, which I think has improved in newer models, but which seems both inconsistent and not all that great in my car.
