I moved out in the country a few years ago, and we had a van before. I loved my van, but I hated the gas cost that we were having. We ended up totaling our car and had to go out and get a new one. We were looking for something affordable and good on gas and came across the car we have now. I travel at least 80 miles everyday so being good on gas was important. It makes trips very easy. Drives smoothly. We got the car from Drive Time. I was not happy with their financing but fairly pleased with the car. Soon after I got the car, I hit a deer, and it damaged the front right side pretty bad. However, the car had great control with stopping so that I was not hurt, and the damage was minimal than when I hit a deer in my van. Living in the country you really need a car that is good on road t... (more)
Story
I travel to and from home with my older son a lot, and he doesn't like the standard radio stations. When he gets in the car, he will plug the aux cord into his phone and listen to a variety of music. We will sing along and play name that song with each other. It makes for a fun road trip.
Pros
Wonderful gas mileage. I average 31-36 miles per gallon. Compact but you have plenty of leg room and head space. Love it being an automatic. Enough room for two car seats and a small person to fit in backseat. Seat belts will comfortably wrap around even a very heavy person. Made with aux cord port so you can listen to music on your phone and answer calls.
Cons
It is very minimal. It would be nice to have a few of the update features. Like the radio. Car has no pick up and go. So what I encounter is when I am at a complete stop or forced to slow down, I have to gradually pick up speed, which sometimes makes cars behind me mad. Would be nice to have a GPS feature.

2010 Nissan Versa - Budget doesn't have to be this bad.

When shopping for a car for my girlfriend, we decided it would need to be a no-frills affair. Working A/C, four doors, enough room to haul things around, and an automatic transmission. After reviewing our options, we settled on the Nissan Versa hatchback. We bought it certified pre-owned, and for the most part, the condition was good (minus the A/C adjustment knobs, which had a weird pattern on them from someone placing stickers on). After nearly four years of ownership, material quality has degraded massively. The interior paneling and seats are marred at the slightest wrong look, and the clunk of the door panels closing gets more and more tinny as time passes. Exterior quality is the same. There is no body protection whatsoever, so any minor incident will result in your car baring th... (more)
Story
We were able to take it on a 24-hour drive within three days, and I was actually pretty comfortable throughout with some breaks for stretching.
Pros
Roominess and comfort aren't bad in the vehicle. The suspension soaks up smaller bumps and interior noise, while not quiet, is not terribly loud. There is plenty of room to store things with it being a hatchback, and rear passenger leg room isn't the worst. It's a simple car with simple features, and the brakes have excellent initial bite, though do fade.
Cons
The quality of construction is bare bones and obviously meant to save money. This was the base model, and the only prominent features were A/C and remote locks, one of which is a huge pain. A/C keeps breaking or leaking resulting in many visits to the dealership. It drives like a boat with very unresponsive steering. While the brakes have good initial bite, they do not inspire confidence in heavy braking situations. Throttle response is not as peppy as other economical four cylinders.
