Nissan Maxima Owner Ratings & Reviews

1996 Nissan Maxima - Comfy, reliable family car
The fact that this car is still on the road in 2018 with over 180,000 miles attests to its reliability. I did not buy it for its full book value but rather received it at way-below that value from my parents, who bought it used from a dealer when it was a few years old. This vehicle has not needed major mechanical work in the six and a half years that I have had it. The serpentine belt was dried out when I got it but has held up, and I do not store it in a garage or pamper it.
Story
Now that I think about it, this car has really endured a lot, at least under my tenure! The streets in the part of New Jersey where I live are always ridden with potholes. My theory on handling them is basically: Blast over them, so you don't end up repeatedly slowing down and sinking into them as you roll through. It almost never fails me. But one particular hole on a local highway was so dee... (more)
Pros
The passenger seating is relatively comfortable, even for three small adults in the back seat. As a short person, I appreciate that I can easily adjust the driver's seat. I can see over the steering wheel and most of the front hood as well as reach the steering wheel and pedals easily. Yet my father, who is considerably taller and huskier-built, picked it because the seating worked well for him. The interior materials and electrical components have held up well.
Cons
The biggest problem I have with the car, and the one that would make me hesitate to purchase a similar vehicle, is poor paint quality. True, we use our cars way longer than most people do these days, but seriously, peeling paint is the reason why my parents decided to basically give it away. It peeled in long, triangle shaped strips, all over the roof and hoods. It just makes the car look extremely low-class and unprofessional. There are other cars on the road that are this old and even older, without such an obvious problem. I think maybe the paint - burgundy - is responsible. When I see ... (more)
1996 Nissan Maxima - Maxine is pristine but requires some love.
My Maxima was great at first; she had all the power I needed and got me around on the ground just as good if not better than any other old car. Her engine was great; she had a 3.0L VQ engine which, at the time, was one of the best six cylinders on the market. The inside had a nice leather looking dash, and there was plenty of leg room in the back seat for friends. The trunk was very spacious. The car had a very "four-door sports car" vibe to it. As it turns out, many who owned the same make/model also agreed. However, it had issues from the factory with alternators and starters. I changed them at least once a year, but that comes with the territory when owning an old fourth generation Maxima. The engine was easy to work on for the most part. I always changed my own spark plugs and kept... (more)
Story
I drove it all over. It went from Alabama to Florida to Kentucky, over to the east coast and back and all without a hitch. I became the guy that drove because of how reliable and how much room the backseat had. I remember driving to Florida for a wedding one year. My fiancé at the time was riding with me, and she wanted me to punch it so she could feel its power. Well, she ended up selling her... (more)
Pros
Looked sleek and like a sports car, even if it was a four-door family sedan. Great engine. One of the best at the time. You could put 300k miles on it easily, and you wouldn't even be able to tell that it was a high-mileage motor. Front-wheel drive so slippery roads were easier and safer to drive on. Cheap to fill up with gas, even though I put premium in it.
Cons
The head gaskets were prone to go out. Radiator supports were weak and cheaply made so they usually ended up having to be replaced. Alternator and starter for some odd reason; at least once a year they needed replacing or you'd be stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck. The headlights were not the brightest; but I guess for the year they came out, they were as good as you could get on anything else.
