Mercury Sable Owner Ratings & Reviews

1996 Mercury Sable - I love this car.
What a like about is that I've over 230,000 miles on in and its 20 years old, you cant find many cars like this with this much miles and only with minor repairs put into it. It has always started up for me in the winter not matter how cold its. The best thing about this car, with this many miles is the fact that I still have the original engine and original transmission. Very few people can say that they even have those things past 150,000 but this car does. The one dislike about this car, to which you can say about all ford products, is the rust. I know I live in WI but this car rust bad, but compared to the upside to this being able to run good this long has to say something. Some car companies have ads were they brag about lasting 10 years, this car lasted 20 and I feel hard press t... (more)
Story
A very memorable car because I drove it to a bar where my friend was celebrating is birthday and when I got there I met his girlfriend who I met briefly several times before. Then I met someone new. His girlfriends friend. Stunning woman, immediately caught my attention. I found myself staring at her periodically throughout the night and often, to my pleasure, she was staring back. So we chatt... (more)
Pros
Features are pretty boring for this car, but what do you expect out of a car that was made in the 90's. It has a cassette player in it. People that are 10 years younger than me don't even know what cassette player is. It has a radio that plays and that's what you are going to get. Bonus for this car is that its easy to install a new radio in this unlike the cars we have today. Its simplicity to operate is a good thing, unlike these cars today that can do everything and you need computer information degree to operate it. The best positive is its reliability. I never had major issues with th... (more)
Cons
The Sable is very comfortable ride, but it’s hard to maneuver around sharp corners. To be honest the inside this brand of cars is showing its age but then again its 20 years old, so what do you expect. The design still looks good, but the materials look old-fashioned compared to the new cars that are out today and the seats, while ok, don’t provide a ton of space. The rust is really bad on these cars, like a lot of fords cars it just loves to rust whenever it can. Its and old car and it doesn't look good for its age and for that matter it was ugly when it came out but you don't buy for loo... (more)
1999 Mercury Sable - Reliably consistent with minimal repair costs
I bought a barely used 1999 Mercury Sable in 2002 and it has lasted 13 years! I purchased it for about $10k and the repair work has been minimal. I do get it tuned up every 3 months, but it usually costs less than $20 dollars. I have beat this car up and while it doesn't look like much anymore - not that it ever did - it is a work horse. The engine is solid and I definitely got my money's worth out of it. It as much a utility vehicle as it is a passenger vehicle. It has leather seats and a huge trunk. I will drive this car into the ground. For my next car I want something just as, if not more reliable like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla. I would just prefer a nicer-looking body than that of a Sable or Taurus. However, I wouldn't change anything about my purchase and use of the Mercury... (more)
Story
There are so many fun and memorable stories associated with this vehicle as it took me through the end of my teenage years almost into my thirties. I have traveled the east coast in this car, I have learned what it is to be alive, and I had fun with a few beautiful women.
Pros
The best things about my Mercury Sable is the reliability and consistency, the decent gas mileage, the comfort and the overall costs associated with maintenance and repair. I also enjoy having an outside temperature gauge for the first time, a sun and moon roof, a huge trunk, and leather seats (although the leather seats can get quite hot and sticky). The other benefit of owning a Sable is the availability of parts if something does go wrong. It has been easy to get second-hand or slightly used parts and they have been just as reliable. The car seems to glide more than other cars I've been... (more)
Cons
The cons of owning the Mercury Sable were mostly due to human error. My sun and moon roof broke because I let someone borrow the car and they inadvertently broke the track, but it still works fairly well, I just have to be gentle. The electrical system has gotten slightly weird in that on occasion the windshield wipers will go randomly when I put on a turn signal, but it is rare and tolerable, especially since it's easy to fix simply by turning them on and off. The other repairs have been my fault because I was in an accident or went too long without regular maintenance. I am bummed the ra... (more)
1998 Mercury Sable - Reliable But not Pretty
I have owned this vehicle for the last year and a half and there are many things about it that I like and dislike. However, regardless of each of those factors, it is a set of wheels that gets me from point A to point B with no issues.
Story
Trying to return from work one night, I got caught in the middle of snow storm. Thankfully I had just had my tires replaced so they had good traction and I only had to drive across town, but it was still terrifying. I remember pulling out onto the road from our parking lot and having to come to a complete stop because I couldn't tell where the edges of the road were or what direction I was sup... (more)
Pros
This car is nice and spacious inside, having six seatbelts total which is great for a college student like myself. My car is usually the car we take when we go on an outing to one of the larger towns nearby so that we only have to take one car as opposed to two. While the color is not great, the extra seatbelt as well as spacious back seat and trunk make it a great car. Gets decent gas mileage - I only have to fill up every two weeks which is a plus since I'm a poor college student.
Cons
The car came with some rust damage on the underside which has only gotten worse since I bought it—Midwest winters are not nice to cars. The car also needed new tires only a few months after I got it as the ones that came with it were nearly bald. Nothing a couple hundred dollars doesn't take care of. Beyond that, the color of the interior is not the greatest and the car is a little bit of a strange shape to me, but I'm super particular about the shape/really like the newer model shapes.
