2000 Mercury Mystique - Low Maintenance, Long Life
I bought my 2000 Mercury Mystique from a friend who was trading up for a newer car. It was clear the vehicle had been ridden hard and put away wet, so to speak. Much of the interior had been torn to shreds, and the outside bore numerous scratch marks and dings. However, the engine purred just fine, and with little to no upkeep on my part the car continues to run like a dream. I have driven it for around 150,000 miles since 2009, up and down rugged hills, through inclement weather, and survived more than one trip into a ditch. Despite being parked outside for extended periods of time in below zero winters and over 120 degree summers, the Mystique continues to start whenever I ask. Despite being parked outside for extended periods of time in below zero winters and over 120 degree summers, the Mystique continues to start whenever I ask. This car has endured a great deal, and will continue to for some time. A few key components have failed during its time with me, but I haven't found that to be irregular of any vehicle that is put under serious strain. The electrical system, however, does not seem to be up to the rigorous standard the rest of the vehicle was designed with. I would recommend this car to anyone who needs a good starter vehicle, or desires a model that will run for a long time and affordably. The mileage on this sedan hovers just under 30 mpg, but I'm sure that could be improved with fuel injector cleanings and a few additives.
I was driving the regulated speed of 70 mph on a bare stretch of highway on a cold and wet night. Already, you know what's wrong with this picture. Well, out of nowhere, without warning, the car loses all traction with the road's surface and it's like I'm on Mario's rainbow road. I was driving the regulated speed of 70 mph on a bare stretch of highway on a cold and wet night. Already, you know what's wrong with this picture. Well, out of nowhere, without warning, the car loses all traction with the road's surface and it's like I'm on Mario's rainbow road. The steep embankments on either side of the highway are pitch black and look like cliffs or deep space, and I start to skate wildly around on the impossibly smooth surface of the road, the beam of my headlights weaving as the car, of its own volition, fishtails, swings, slips, and hurtles on into infinite darkness. I never once scream or shout, I just laugh manically and spin the wheel in arbitrary directions, attempting to find any correlation between motion and intent. Eventually, the car straightens out, and I continue on my way, still going 70 mph and over what I now know to be frozen ice. The incident lasted less than thirty seconds, and though I was in extreme danger, I never felt frightened because, and this is the strangest part, I felt like my car knew what it was doing. Whether I was merely lucky, or the ice was thinner than I thought I'll never know, but suffice to say this 2000 Mercury Mystique kept me alive for at least one more winter.
This car has survived a number of events and disasters that would have slain much of its competition. It's a low upkeep vehicle; between rotating the tires and sparingly changing the oil, I've had little to do with the vehicle's maintenance. The car is fairly hardy and will put up with most terrain and weather without a fuss.

The electrical system is close to a disaster. I've had batteries die while the car was running, my blinkers can fail erratically, and sometimes rolling the window up or down will drain the battery of all life in an instant. This isn't just a battery problem, but some kind of failing capacitor. In addition to this, the car is, as most are, fairly lightweight, and can lose traction very easily if its driver is either not attentive or has a lack of experience with inclement conditions.

1999 Mercury Mystique -
The Mercury Mystique is a classic car. It is still from the era of steel, metal body and frame. This is important because it has a greater chance of withstanding an accident than fiberglass counterparts. The power in this car is great and it has a few amenities. The horsepower in the engine gives quick take off speed and strong acceleration. The body style of the your typical 90's body and it came in powder blue. It is reliable and dependable. Even in 2016, this car can outscore newer models in the same class.

The most memorable moments that I have is going fishing in this car, that's basically all we do in this car because we have others. One time my husband was driving and he was flying down the road about 70 - 80 mph and we can up on some construction. All of a sudden the street had a sharp curve and he almost crashed us and I was so great to make it the sound.

I like that when I am climbing up a bridge or steep incline, the car doesn't pull or sputter. It just accelerates like a charm and no difference is noticed. The car has A/C and heat. For this age of the car, the A/C blows so cold that you can see the mist come out of the vents. I go fishing twice a week, every other week. We use this car to carry our fishing equipment and it has a lot of space. We can pack 6 poles, two coolers, aerator and bucket, two carts, two chairs, umbrella, tackle box, four propane lights and some more.

The cons of this car is that it has a burn out factor in the cable that goes from the starter to the battery. The cable burnt up and is causing shortages in the car starting. I painted the car a turquoise color from a paint guide. When they were finished with the car, it looked horrible. The color is very unappealing and a waste of money. I had that done because the clear coat on the color was fading and it was beginning to rust.

1998 Mercury Mystique - I'm very pleased with it!
I love this car! The interior of the car is nothing fancy, especially compared to the cars today! However, it has leather seats and is very comfortable. It rides very smooth and actually has power when I need it. (I'm a woman who doesn't drive much) I haven't experienced any annoying rattles or noises, and this baby is 20+ years old! There are a few problems with the electrical system. Sometimes the radio misbehaves and the speakers alternate. Kind of annoying, but it's livable. It has been very reliable for me. The transmission had to be replaced in 2015. I'm not sure if that's because I didn't check the fluid like I'm supposed to, or if it was just worn out. (woman--no man to take care of it LOL) The back seats come down, so I could sleep in it if I had to!

This car has good mileage. I've driven it from Texas to Washington a few times and it performed very well. I like the size of the vehicle. It's not too small, and not too big. It's not very expensive to maintain. I get the regular oil changes and not a whole lot else. The heat and A/C works all the time. I have never had to do any major work except the transmission.

Well, not too many negatives. At this time, the trunk has developed a leak, so things get moist. That's annoying. The radio antenna doesn't go down.
