Mercury Grand Marquis Owner Ratings & Reviews

1986 Mercury Grand Marquis - It's good for getting from point A to B
The seats are extremely soft and comfortable. There are ample leg room so there is no crowding. The car has a lot of noise though, so you can't hear others speaking. For example, the weather stripping on the windows is not good anymore, and the windows rattle. For a while there was a hole in the exhaust pipe, which made it impossible to hear anything else. The back windows no longer work because they need new regulators, the speakers and AC don't work either. There is only an old radio and cassette player for entertainment, so having a device with downloaded music or an app like Pandora is essential if you don't want to sit in windy silence for a whole ride. The benefit of the car is that it is easy to work on. There is a lot of room under the hood and the components are not piled on t... (more)
Story
I don't know about fun, but having it completely stop working in the middle of a huge intersection on rt 70 and rt 35 was definitely memorable. A kind man in a work vehicle asked if I needed help and parked behind me with his hazards because mine wouldn't go on. He obviously had places to be, but he stayed until the police and tow truck came.
Pros
It is older than I am it is impressive that the engine and transmission are in excellent condition, the body is generally in excellent condition, the interior is like new, and the fabric ceiling doesn't sag at all. The seats are like luxurious couches and there is ample room for maximum comfort. There is a ton of trunk space. The replacement parts are usually cheap and stupid easy fixes. There is a lot of space under the hood so it's easy to work on, as opposed to newer cars that have everything piled on top of each other.
Cons
It is unreliable. Everything breaks and needs to be replaced. It has a terrible turn radius and is slow to accelerate. It doesn't get many miles per gallon. It doesn't have a crumple zone and has terrible crash test ratings.
2004 Mercury Grand Marquis - Old school ride
The car has plenty of power and being rear wheel drive it's much more fun to drive. I like the very smooth ride and spacious interior. The power everything interior is very nice. I feel much safer in the larger heavier car and having 4 doors and seat belts plus room for 6 makes it great for lugging around your friends. If I had to pick between this and a smaller but new car for long road trip I would certainly pick this. Also when you need to pass at highway speeds nothing beats a old school V8 under the hood for acceleration quickly when you're already going 70 miles per hour. Overall if you are looking to buy a used car, this is one of the best bargains, they could be bought everywhere and are inexpensive and easy to maintain for the home mechanic.
Story
I love cruising around Tampa with my car, also being painted black and having a crown vic style look to it is amusing when people think you are a cop car and everybody slows down, although that can get annoying.
Pros
Large spacious interior makes it easy for anybody to sit comfortably and even having 6 people gives you plenty of room. There a absolutely gigantic trunk if you have a big family and need to load up on large grocery loads. Another nice feature is the full size spare tire which is a rare find on many new cars. If you blow a tire on a road trip you don't have to worry about limping along in the middle of nowhere with a "doughnut" tire. You can just keep going on your trip. The dual air bags as well as solid frame make me feel safe and secured if there ever was an accident.
Cons
Gas mileage with the 8 cylinder engine can be a concern, but if you do a lot of highway driving it actually gets quite a good miles per gallon rate. The interior isn't really optimized for the driver or passenger to reach the radio and climate controls. You have to lean forward and reach for most of the controls to get to them unless you have very long arms. Like any car there are a few things they are notorious for, watch out for light issues with the lighting control module failing on you, you will have no head lights but that is easy enough to replace yourself if you are a bit handy and... 1989 Mercury Grand Marquis - Great solid running vehicle.
The reasons I like this car is because it has a lot of room, very comfortable to ride in the trunk is big enough to put all of my camping gear including a large cooler and fishing gear in. It is easy to work on unlike newer vehicles. It has low miles, only 2 previous owners.
Some of the things I don't like are it uses a lot of gas, hard to find parts for older cars. It's harder to find a parking spot for. I like big older cars they are solid unlike newer cars they take more of a beating. I found that it is harder to find replacement tires for it and the stock radio needs an upgrade. It's very easy to spot because you really don't see too many like tithe air conditioner still works great it will freeze you out. The heater works great as well. I love the interior it is velvety and soft b... (more)
Story
Taking it to the drive in with all the grandkids we hid them under the blankets in the back seat and the attendant couldn't even see three of them, when they got tired they had plenty of room to sleep in the back seat we also always take our 90 pound dog with us he loves going every place we go he has plenty of room. Also we have thrown candy from it in our towns firemen's parade with the gran... (more)
