This was the first year released model of the convertible Miata MX5 by Mazda. Mazda promoted this as an entry level low cost convertible. I have to admit that given the low price this was one of the most fun vehicles that I had ever owned. The 5-speed transmission and two latch and one zipper convertible top release made any long highway or coast journey an enjoyable experience. The car was used primarily as a work commuter and weekend trip car. I daily took it along the Pacific Highway Coast and through Topanga and Mulholland Canyons. Despite it's small wheel size, the car drove like it was on rails. The car with several package options and the air conditioning and third party sound system only added to the driving enjoyment in all types of weather. The only non standard maintenance i... (more)
Story
I got the vehicle when I was a freshman in college. I picked up my buddy to take the vehicle for a spin and we drove all night arriving back at our dorm late the next morning.
Pros
The car's base model price of $14,990 added to its fuel economy which was 28 highway and 22 city driving when the cost of 87 octane was around a buck a gallon made this a very affordable vehicle. The tires seemed to last forever and I finally decided to change them just to be on the safe side. The convertible top was easy release and sealed well during damp weather.
Cons
The car came from the factory with a poor sound system. The back window oxidized to an ugly opaque orange color and ultimately cracked after several years. There was not a lot of storage or leg space -- but what do you expect in a small convertible.

It is not a very fast car. The interior is small and cramped. There is little trunk space. Fortunately this is a convertible and the top can be dropped as long as it is not raining to eliminate claustrophobia. The car seems unsafe, my gramma got in a fender bender in it and her arm was broken. Overall it has held together mildly well for such an old car. The transmission is finally going out on it. The convertible soft top has a few minor leaks when it is raining. A lot has been replaced under the hood like sensors, fuel filters, etc.
Story
We like to drive the Miata around my grandma's house which sits on a very hilly lake. It is great fun in the summer to drop the top and zoom around.
Pros
The car is very fun to drive. It is sort of like a little go cart. I enjoy being able to drop the convertible top as well. In addition this one has pop up lights and came in red so to me it is aesthetically pleasing. It is easy to park considering how small it is. Wide variety of aftermarket parts available.
Cons
Since this car is so small I am afraid to be hit by big trucks here in Texas. Over time almost everything in the car has needed to be replaced. Servicing the Miata is also a pain because it is a foreign car. Getting it worked on can be expensive and time consuming.

This car is very fun to drive. It's very speedy and handles very well, with a very tight suspension. It gets excellent gas mileage--up to 30 mpg, and it is great for both highway and city driving. It holds its value very well and is very easy to work on, so maintenance is very cheap. It has power windows, air conditioning, and doesn't seem like an older car at all. It's comfortable for a smaller car, and since it's a convertible, there's more room if you open the roof. It's also very stylish and people will often turn to look. This is the second Miata I have owned and I've had no major problems. I definitely recommend this car.
Story
I took this car up a canyon, and it handles the curvy road well.
Pros
Fast, good fuel economy, comfortable, stylish
Cons
No back seat, not much storage space
