I have owned this vehicle for almost 10 years and bought it brand new from the showroom. It has been a great vehicle for the most part but has had some major repairs in the past few months. I like that it has sliding back doors because I have kids and don't need them hitting the cars we park beside- that's one of my favorite things. I do not like that the tires are performance tires. They don't last as long as traditional tires and are expensive. Fuel economy is not too bad. The car itself has been good I just wish Mazda had more service centers in my area.
Story
It came with a tray that stows under the seat in the middle row- the sales man acted like it was the greatest thing in the car because we have kids and they could flip it out and keep their stuff in there. I HAVE NEVER USED IT! I laugh every time I clean the car because I lift the seat and see it there- I open it, vacuum around it, and back it goes!!
Pros
It has lasted 10 years and is still going strong. Every 4 door car should have sliding rear doors. I love the hatch back and the third row seating. Being able to fold the middle and back row down is very helpful when needing to haul stuff. It handles wonderfully especially on windy roads.
Cons
I do not like that the tires are performance tires, while they handle well and grip the road well they wear out quickly and are expensive compared to other standard tires. They also do not go well in the snow. Snow tires for this car are almost unaffordable because of their odd size. The car also needed the engine replaced at 75,000 miles and the transmission replaced at 82,000. Thanks to the Mazda warranty both of those repair were done at their cost so I am still able to enjoy my vehicle.

The Mazda5 is a great family vehicle. The second row captain seats fit many different types of car seats, and with latch, they install easily. These seats are also tall enough to enable even small children to easily see out the windows. Storage under the seats is perfect for tissues, first aid kit, or extra kid clothes. Fold-down third row seating provides plenty of room for daily trips to stores, soccer, or the beach while also giving Grandma a place to sit when she visits (and saving the expense of a rental car). The sliding doors make it easy to get toddlers or babies in and out of their seats without worrying about dinging the door of the vehicle next to you. The Mazda5 is also easy to drive. Unlike traditional mini-vans, it's the size of a sedan, so easy to fit in a compact parkin... (more)
Story
In what seems like an "only in Portlandia!" Moment, I once pulled into a Trader Joe's parking lot across from another Mazda5. The other driver, loading groceries in the back, looked at me, smiled, and yelled "MAZDA FIVE!!" While thrusting her fist triumphantly in the air. I, of course, had to return both the yell and the gesture.
Pros
Sliding doors and captain seats are perfect for kids - easy in and out and a natural separation to prevent sibling squabbles. There is plenty of storage with the third row folded down, and it's easy to access through the rear lift door. With the third row up, it's an extra seat for soccer team mates or Grandma. Window locks and front and rear speakers keep annoyances to a minimum.
Cons
At 20mpg for city driving, the gas mileage could be better. The low-profile tires wear out more often than might be expected.

I've owned the Mazda 5 for 8 years now. I really love this car. The Mazda 5 like a small minivan, you might call it a "micro-mini van." It is very comfortable to drive and quite comfortable for passengers as well. This is a six passenger vehicle. It seats four people in captain-chair type seats and also has a third fold-down seat to fit two more people comfortably. The four main seats are fully adjustable and have arm rests. Another great feature is that the car has a sliding door on each side like the kind most bigger minivans have. The back has a lift door making it easy to put things in and out. What's nice is that this car has all the perks of a minivan but is still low-profile, not much taller than an ordinary passenger car. The Mazda 5 gets great gas mileage because it has a fou... (more)
Story
I loaded up my sons and my two nephews, and we went on a nature drive in the canyons one fall day. This car is great for that because the four boys could spread out and not bug each other. We stopped at a day picnic spot and had snacks, and while we were there, five beautiful deer wandered by and came up close to the car. We sat there in the car for a long time and watched the deer nibble on t... (more)
Pros
Some of my most favorite features of the Mazda 5 are first, the great gas mileage. I usually get at least 25-30 MPG. I also love how roomy the vehicle is. You can seat six, and there is plenty of room for cargo. I absolutely love that there are two sliding doors on either side, making it easy to get in and out. I love it that the Mazda 5 does not really look like your typical minivan. You don't need to be a soccer mom to love it!
Cons
One thing I don't like about the Mazda 5 is that the doors are not automatic. To open the back, you have to click the key but then also you do have to manually open the door. The same with the sliding side doors. I don't like the cheap plastic bumpers on this car. They are very easily scratched or broken by the most minor things.
