I bought the car in October '09; waited this long (4500 miles) so my review would be more useful than just the flush of new romance. I wasn't even looking for a new car. Decided to look at the Mazda 3 just for fun (I do that a lot) and ended up trading in my '03 Infiniti G-35 for a Grand Touring s Mazda 3 sedan! I prefer the sedan because I like a trunk, don't haul bulky stuff and drive mostly by myself. I've never looked back! I'm no kid, 69 my next birthday, but I like to drive and have fun while I'm doing it. The Mazda 3 is as much fun to drive as my G-35 was, with much better gas mileage and on regular gas, too! Took a 2000-mile trip over Xmas, got over 30 mpg at "interesting" speeds. A very comfortable road car: drove all the way home in one day (969 miles, two pit stops) and when... (more)
Story
I've driven across the us with this car most fun I've had out of the car is being able to go on road trips with my kids. We've been camping to the beach mountain climbing, tubing to the rivers and so on. It has gotten us all over.
Pros
Athletic handling, refined and zippy engines, sharp styling, top-notch build and materials quality, sharp styling, hatchback utility, luxury features and ambiance at a budget price.
Cons
So-so fuel economy with 2.3-liter engine, top safety equipment is optional on lower trim levels, tight rear legroom.

I got my Mazda3 s Grand Touring from my dad a few years ago, and it's simply perfect. It was provided to me in mostly great quality besides the paint on the front fender, which was damaged. It exemplifies what I love about Mazda in general — they aspire to make truly fun cars to drive, even when they're low on power. On top of that, it's more than luxurious enough for my needs, with lifetime Sirius/XM and satellite navigation, plus Bluetooth. My only qualms with it are that the automatic transmission isn't as great as their amazing manual, and the satnav screen is a little small.
Story
I chased a friend in his 370z around some twisty roads on our way out of class. He naturally got away in straights but I held up admirably in turns.
Pros
The Mazda3 is surprisingly fun to drive for an economy-level car, with handing, steering wheel feel, general responsiveness in the pedals, and communicative but not excessive body roll. The technology and BOSE sound system work wonderfully. The seats and ride quality are great for a little sporty driving or long cruises. The 2.5l engine is peppy enough.
Cons
The previous owner never rotated the tires and the rear shocks were broken, and it's not the manual version.
