My wife and I selected this model of Sportage because we knew of its reputation for rough terrain handling and rugged durability. In those aspects, it hasn't disappointed. If you compare the older and newer models of Kia Sportage, you'll notice that all of the newer ones are lower to the ground. This is something that's baffled me. If you want to take full advantage of the four-wheel-drive on this baby, you don't want her skimming too close to the road. That sort of thing can spell trouble. With this model we're up at a safe distance from rocks, potholes, etc. Another feature of the newer models that's less than desirable is all of the plastic that goes into them. Our older model is made of big solid chunks of durable metal.
Story
We were driving up a mountain foothill not long after it rained (not generally a good idea), when the car in front of us started slipping in the mud. We were able to push it ahead of us to the next station and the other driver paid for our gas!
Pros
The engine is a hog. It hasn't gone out on us yet. The car is also built like a tank. We were rear-ended by a brand new ford. Destroyed the ford, barely dented the back of our car!
Cons
Since we were looking for durability above all else, we were willing to sacrifice when it came to some amenities and more superficial features. It doesn't have a lot of the features of new cars. It doesn't get great gas mileage, but it's no hummer either. It can be hard to find new parts for it as well.

I first saw Sporty on the website of the car dealer that I have mostly used over the years. At the time, I was driving a Toyota Corolla. This was a time when Toyotas were in the news for having massive problems, and because of back issues, I was needing a bigger car just to facilitate getting in and out. Sporty seemed like the perfect solution. I liked the look and the style. It was a small SUV. I'm not the best backer-upper, so I didn't want something too big. Kia in general has a good reputation, too.
Pros
As I said, my Kia Sportage is more a CUV than an SUV because it is a smaller car with an overall SUV body. It's a 2007 model ~ from back in the day when SUVs looked like SUVs and not wannabe station wagons as they do now. It is one of my two favorite car colors: white ~ and the interior is beige, another of my preferences over the usual gray or black. It is extremely easy for me to get in and out of ~ a huge pro because of my back issues. Loading and unloading groceries is a snap, and one some occasions, putting the tailgate down as a seat has proved very helpful. I also like how it handle... (more)
Cons
Sporty was a very basic version ~ which is why I could afford it. However, it did lack a couple of things that I had grown used to ~ a temperature indicator and keyless lock/unlock. As a gift, some friends bought me installation of remote entry/starter, though, so now Sporty has everything but the outside temp gage. It's my dream car.
