I bought this car with 200k miles and I have only had to do the brakes once and a few oil changes. It now has 223k miles and hasn't given me any problems. The car did come from Hawaii so it has some damage from all of the sun. The car also has an oil leak from the valve cover so I have been keeping an eye on the oil and adding when needed. One time I neglected to check the oil and it did not register on the dipstick. Oops! The car still runs like a champ.
Story
It doesn't snow too much in the Pacific Northwest but when it does, my Kia does fine.
Pros
Very cheap cars but also very light weight and reliable, which leads to them being good commuter or family cars. They are easy to work on for an amateur mechanic as the parts and systems aren't too complex. They can also take the abuse of a teenage driver but won't get them going fast enough to hurt them.
Cons
The interior is cheaply made. The dash, up by the windshield, is starting to peel back from all the heat it has been exposed to, I would not recommend this car for a hot climate. The armrest is broke but usually stays in place. There are also no power options.

2003 Kia Spectra - Superficial and unreliable

The car drives well. It has good acceleration and power for its size and handles very well. The issue comes more with its longevity. It shipped with a malfunction clutch, which needed to be replace less than two years after purchase. Two years after that, the transmission failed, due in part to previous stress put on it by the malfunctioning clutch. The water seals around the doors started to loosen after a few years, causing moisture to easily get into the cab. The cigarette lighter stopped charging, meaning it was no longer possible to charge a cell phone or GPS device. The passenger side windshield wiper failed. Even the heater control arm will detach, meaning you can't switch vents, including going to defrost, without manually reattaching below the steering wheel. Driver seat becam... (more)
Story
Driving through the Chukanut Hills in the summer with the windows down. The Puget Sound visible on one side with the hills on the other, playing music while driving down the scenic serpentine highway.
Pros
Fun drive. Good handling, good zip. Solid stock stereo system.
Cons
General lack of reliability. Parts, both critical and feature in nature, failing regularly.
