2015 Kia Soul - Great value that lasts
Overall, considering my hesitations up front about the car's appearance, I have been really happy with the Kia Soul as a family car. It is not pretty to look at and the power to the engine is a little low, but beyond that, it is incredibly safe, gets great fuel economy, and the inside is roomy and comfortable.
Story
Again, this is not an all-wheel drive vehicle, and we pushed that to the limit once, getting the car stuck on a steep hill in the middle of the woods with our young child in the back seat. My wife and I had to do a running start, and I had to push it up the hill. 10/10. Would get stuck again.
Pros
This car is ridiculously comfortable, especially in the front seat. The Bluetooth connection is seamless and audio quality is solid. Considering the shape of the car, it is surprisingly easy to see out of and has good sight lines. Additionally, this car has fantastic fuel economy and gets almost 30 miles per gallon consistently.
Cons
Really the only negatives I have about this car are the engine power and the overall aesthetic of the car. It struggles sometimes to get up to full speed, especially when it is at capacity. This can be compounded when the car is doing a lot, like going up hill and running the air conditioning. Is it a deal breaker? No. But our next car will need more power. Additionally, it is not an all-wheel drive car, and that is limiting for what you can do with the vehicle. Kia needs to make that an option on future versions.
2016 Kia Soul - A car with Soul!
This car has more features than a loaded burrito! I thought things like heated seats and steering wheels are things only found in luxury cars, but clearly, that is not the case. The Soul has more power than my previous box-shaped car (Scion xB) and is a lot more fun to drive. The moon roof is an absolute joy to have in the summer months and lets in tons of natural light in the darker winter months.
Story
Driving myself, my partner, and my dog to the beach on the longer, winding road enjoying the fresh air and bright sunshine through the windows.
Pros
The number of standard features in this trim model is absurd! The sound system is incredible. The power of this vehicle makes it fun to drive. The moon roof basically makes the entire roof of the vehicle a big window. The navigation system and radio are encompassed in a humongous screen that is both easy to see and intuitive to navigate.
Cons
The gas mileage isn't as high as it could/should be. Leather seats become very, very hot in the sun. Having the cover over the moon roof makes the car feel claustrophobic. The "trunk" area of the car seems smaller than it looks. The car does not come with a traditional "donut" tire as a spare but includes only an air compressor and "fix-a-flat" goo for fixing your tire. The maintenance people at Les Schwab were not impressed because fixing a tire that does not have the goo in it is apparently a lot easier than fixing one that has been filled with it.
